    May 11th Steinhart Aquarium Tour

The tour was awesome and being some one who is trying to be a learning sponge, I was grateful to come away with some new insights and perspectives in keeping a healthy reef tank. I second Ray and Lily's comments above. Matt did such a great job as tour guide. I was glad that he was able to...

Best practices for heading out of town

Patchin, I live in the South of Market district in San Francisco - convenient to 101/280 and Costco! LOL Mike, Great advice and thank you. I generally do 20-30 gallon water changes every 4-5 days. If I do, say a 40 gallon water change for my 175g before I go, I wonder if I could get by...

Best practices for heading out of town

Hi BARs Crew, As it so happens, I am once again off on a business trip and am adding a few days of "me" time to the trip. I'll be gone 10 days total. I HATE LEAVING MY TANK FOR THAT LONG. But as others of you probably know...some times you have to do it. I am wondering what are...

Coming back to the hobby after 3 years break.

Welcome back to the hobby! As it so happens...I have a custom 75 gallon acrylic tank in storage (I upgraded to a 175 gallon in Sept 2012). I also have the custom stand and a PS300 sump - all from TruVu. I only mention this here because the dimensions of my tank fit what you seek -...

Ich: Finding My Truth (amidst the gazillion philosophies, schools of thought and approaches)

Oh...and let me add...if you want to QT your corals, you might have to have an invert only QT tank. This would be needed in the event you ran any kind of copper treatment on your fish QT. Then it gets really crazy trying to keep anything that touched copper separate. When I did this, I would...

Ich: Finding My Truth (amidst the gazillion philosophies, schools of thought and approaches)

So...please allow me to throw in another opinion that I ran across in my online meanderings (seeking the evasive truth about ich). Someone pointed out to me that they tried the QT method and had terrible luck with it. The fish would go in to the QT tank and be stressed out and not eat and...

Ich: Finding My Truth (amidst the gazillion philosophies, schools of thought and approaches)

Rich (Thales), I got a kick out of the video you posted, the cartoon too. AND...the article you wrote totally touches upon where I am. That's why the title of this post relates to finding my truth. At the end of the day we each have to do what works for us to keep the animals in our...

Ich: Finding My Truth (amidst the gazillion philosophies, schools of thought and approaches)

Also, any comments on fish with perceived immunity (note that I am not stating with certainty that immunity to ich is a reality proven scientifically) having discomfort associated with the parasite. If they are "immune" does that mean ich stays off them or does it just stay undetected?

Ich: Finding My Truth (amidst the gazillion philosophies, schools of thought and approaches)

Thanks ALL! And thank you for the reference, Gimmito. I will be at the talk and will buy the book (if not sooner, at the event). Re: goby in overflow...I may try some sort of suction technique to get him out. It would be so much easier if I could just remove my corals and do hypo in...

Ich: Finding My Truth (amidst the gazillion philosophies, schools of thought and approaches)

Many thanks, David and Mark. That is EXACTLY the type of information that I needed. OK. Now I'm thinking QT tank for fish as per standard practice. I'll have to trap that Goby some how. Thing is, access to the overflow is limited and space within the overflow is smallish with 3...

Ich: Finding My Truth (amidst the gazillion philosophies, schools of thought and approaches)

Can anyone provide insights/information in to the following questions about treating ich? 1) If I opt to do hypo salinity treatment for my fish -- is there any reason that I couldn't take the corals out of my DT and put in another tank and leave the fish in the DT and decrease the salinity...

Ich: Finding My Truth (amidst the gazillion philosophies, schools of thought and approaches)

Thanks, gimmito, for the advice. My 75g is cube-ish - it is a custom shape: 36W, 20H, 24D I think I am going to get rid of the Naso and Foxface straightaway. Every thing else is pretty small - wrasse included - I have one Scott's that is pretty large by definition. The rest are...
