thinking about giving a cold water a whirl

There are no size limits on any rockfish but bocaccio, so you could catch 10 per day per person no problem. Here's a guide to identifiying baby rockfish http://www.piscoweb.org/files/file/Kelp-Forest-Monitoring/classroom-materials/training-yoy-id.pdf

thinking about giving a cold water a whirl

The yelloweye rockfish is so rare in California, that is effectively a statewide limit on the number of yelloweyes seen by fishermen. If you must experiment with rockfish, I would implore you to try a different one. To be honest, I don't think any rockfish is a good idea in a 120. Even the...

thinking about giving a cold water a whirl

FYI possession of yelloweye rockfish is not legal in California. I think you would have a hard time getting one to survive the barotrauma anyway. Personally, I think the coolest local fish to keep would be the painted greenling. Catalina goby would be a nice addition as well. And strawberry...

What happens when you abandon a clam aquaculture facility?

Yeah, there are tons of young ones. Their favorite habitat seems to be "microatolls" where the tops of massive corals have died from bleaching or something similar.

What happens when you abandon a clam aquaculture facility?

Hi guys, sorry for the delay, I'm back. These were taken at Orpheus Island, a nearshore reef between Townsville and Cairns in Queensland. There used to be an aquaculture program on the island in the 1990s and these were intended as breeding stock but it closed down some time ago (I want to say...

What happens when you abandon a clam aquaculture facility?

You end up with this! Sorry for the poor picture, the vis wasn't that great. There are hundreds of these clams, all around 2 feet across or more.

    2013 Florida Coral Spawning Project

Some reefs (such as the Great Barrier Reef) have mass spawnings that occur roughly the same time every year, and we can predict them with a surprising amount of accuracy. As mentioned by lattehiatus, the timing is determined by lunar cycles (they occur roughly every 12 full moons) and...

    Nudibranch for Aptasia

I second the filefish, worked great in my aquarium, and once the aptasia are gone, they are an inquisitive little fish, that is fun to watch.

    ID this please :)

Isopod for sure, though from the picture I couldn't say what species. Not all of them are parasitic, if you notice any in or around the gills of your fish, that would be the time to worry. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-05/rs/

Do you feed your BTAs? What do you feed them with?

Hmm, didn't know there were problems with silversides... good to know. That's what I always fed them in the past, but haven't bought them in a while, they seem to pick up enough chunky stuff from rod's food. Up to six of those guys now, might have to do something about that soon!

    Greetings from downunder

Move is permanentish. Started my masters degree at James Cook University. Cute dog is living with my parents now. Turns out to bring a dog to Australia they require a one month quarantine, which just seems mean! The school actually has a few pretty sweet aquariums that researchers regularly...

    Greetings from downunder

Hey Guys! Been a while, kinda dropped off the grid. But more recently, I moved to Townsville, Queensland! So that's fun. Thought I would share a little project. I'm sure most of you are familiar with Seriatopora hystrix or the bird nest coral. Well some of them get a little crab that forces...
