They ran a huge national survey and found that only 40% of IT specialists would upgrade from XP to Vista. Just go back to XP and wait for Windows 7 to come out in 2010. Who knows, with the growth of Apple right now they might have a bigger piece of the market and we'll have a more competitive market for better operating systems down the road.

Was the power cord you plugged in a higher or lower volt/watt rating? If you over over volt you can have some physical damage, but under volt/watt is no problem.

Does it still boot or do you think its cooked?

Cheers,

Josh

I upgraded to vista when it first came out. It took like, 5 minutes to boot up, and then I had to turn off all the "high end" features to get bearable performance out of my laptop.

I wiped the HDD out and went Ubuntu after that >:(

Yeah, I think Vista is a bit too much for "dummies". It took me 10 minutes to figure out how to setup my wireless network. Too many "one click setup" kind of things. All I wanted to do was specify an ssid, encryption method, and password. Instead, I went through a bunch of "diagnose your network" guides. Frustrating, lol.

I refused to upgrade to Vista out of principle, there was/is nothing wrong with WinXP, it works fine, Vista is simply a "prettier" version that does a bunch of stuff that you can do with XP with 3rd party programs anyways. Not to mention as Ray said when the OS puts that big of a strain on your resources/processing power simply to make it work then that's a very poorly made operating system. Although I am pissed DirectX10 is vista only, but whatever I can wait it out until the next version even when MS stops supporting XP

I run it only because that is the program I have a copy of. But then again it runs on a small partition of my HD. I run Mac OS X and love it. super fast and reliable for me. I have never had a single issue. I am just forced to run a windows operating system part of the time because of a program I have for work that is PC based.

Wrong power cord would do nothing different and would not fit. You mean you plugged in the wrong transformer/wall wart?

Yeah, it's just okay. Looks great but unless you have 2gigs or more, it's useless. I haven't had a blue screen yet, knock on wood.

I have only 1GB on my laptop :( .. laptop memories are expensive ..

you'd be surprised how much memory has dropped for laptops. 2.5" hard drives are also dropping. You can 320GB for $200 now, unheard of 2 years ago.

most lappies only upgrade to 2GB total and most have two available slots.

you can get 2x1GB for $34 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134554

or if you have 1x1GB already in there you can get an additional stick for $16 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208314

just make sure to match the speed, since it will bottle neck to the slowest stick.

The Dell laptop and HP laptop I have have the same connector. Of course the transformer is different as well.
[/quote]

4 connections
120vac, 120vac-transformer side, 12vdc (or what ever)-transformer side, 12vdc(or what ever) computer side.

Which are you talking about? The one that goes into the computer after the transformer?

the connector that goes into the laptop.. It's the same type/size. If I don't pay attention, I will plug in the wrong one.

Supposedly SP1 did a lot for Vista. Not really sure how much since I don't run Vista, even though I have Vista Ultimate. Running XP 64 instead.

Oh if you think Vista suck, try phone that run Window Mobile ::) .. The damn thing freeze just like any other windows >:( ;D ..

I am not much of a fan of Vista personally. I am currently running MAC and through Fusion i have XP pro running for viewing Netflix online, something about DRM and apple not having support for it. I don't mind it much. I remember when it first came out. I actually had to talk in front of a TV camera and say a bunch of good things about Vista for a company I worked for. I liked the special attention I was getting but the information sucked. I was all for it at the time but now i recommend all my client, friends and family to stay away from Vista and hopefully windows 7 will fix all the issues that Vista has.
