It's been 4 years since I ran my last tank, a 90g (pictured here). I've been lurking around in the background since then, occasionally toying with the idea of another tank.
I was washing the windows when I came across this giant Rubbermaid bin of the base rock from my 90g. It is just BRS...
I give you the prototype reef vacuum, a concept I've wanted to try for some time.
I just used it to suck the junk out of my sump and it worked great.
It's basically a 10in canister with a 100 micron reusable filter. A mag 9 provides suction through the filter.
The one big problem I had...
I'm in the midst of a big new tank hair algae bloom.
I want to pluck the growth often, and that means not relying on putting my arm in.
I've tried metal tongs but they don't grip well enough to pull the hair algae.
Anyone know of a decent tool I could use without sticking my arm in the...
I'd like the get a variety of bristle worms, spaghetti worms, pods, and other small stuff to inhabit the rocks and sand. What has everyones experience been ordering online? Any suggestions from where?

Member xcaret was kind enough to give me this tank back when I moved to the bay area in 2014. I've since upgraded to a 90g tank.
Here is the tank and stand:

Note: I have no glass top for this any more - I managed to break it.
This is the perfect tank for a new hobbyist...
I finally got my 90g tank and sumo filled tonight. As I was coiling up the rodi lines I noticed the waste line started trickling a bit, and the auto shutoff valve started softly humming. The water started trickling more and the hum got louder until all of a sudden the water stopped and the...
As the move-in date for my house draws near, I get to thinking of my 90g tank and where I will set it up. I've got a slab foundation, so I can't run piping under the house. However, if the tank backs up onto an exterior wall I was thinking I could put the sump and equipment outdoors. The side...
Does anyone out there use RO/DI waste water to fill their hot tub?
The house we bought has one and its currently empty. I think there's still a moratorium on using potable drinking water to fill hot tubs. I was thinking that my RO/DI waste water would be a good source of water which I could...
Hey All,
Sorry I haven't been present as much lately. My family has been busy touring houses in the hope of buying a place of our own.
One thing I got to thinking about in terms of moving is how I'll move my current 34g tank. Of course in a perfect world I could just set up the 90g tank I've...
I am looking at using Caribsea Bahamas Oolite sand in my 90g tank. Everywhere I look its around $29-35 for 20lb. Petco (of all places) has a pretty good price listed of $17.99 for 20lb:

...and a new reef is born! I figured I should probably journal new new 90g setup in a new thread.
Here is the tank, after successful delivery; thanks so much to @<3-2-reef and @wpeterson for moving the tank!
WPeterson did a great job cleaning out the tank, so there's not much to do on that...
I've got two pumps I'd like to get rid of.
One is a PCX-40; its not perfectly quiet as it should be so I suspect maybe the impeller is unbalanced or maybe it needs new bearings. In any case its great for a mixing vat.
The other is a Sequence 1000SEQ22. Its a BEAST of a pump, rated at...
Hello cab anyone recommend someone to move a 90g tank? I'm going to buy Winfields 90g tank but with my bad back I am limited to 30lb lifting. So I don't even want to risk doing it myself. I have access to a large van if need be.
I'm definitely willing to pay for the move. It would be from...
If anyone needs a plastic transfer pipette (or 5) let me know and I can bring some to the next bar meeting.
I lost the pipettes for a few of my test kits. Of course it was only $5 for 100 of them, so I've got plenty to spare if anyone needs some.

So, my first wp10 failed after about a year of use.
I took it all apart and soaked it in vinegar so everything is clean now.
I find it won't spin up unless you manually spin the prop a few times. As soon as it stops it won't start again. No noticeable seizing of the prop or anything...
Today while I was at the machine shop, I decided I've build a small frag rack for my tank. I made some insets on the back piece that fits some magnets, so I'll use that to hold it to the glass.
This is the FIRST time I have done a solvent weld for acrylic, and as you can see on the left side...
Has anyone fragged rics? My blue ones have finally spread enough I feel I should do some fragging so others can enjoy these beauties.
From what I've seen the approach should be to cut a single polyp through the middle of its mouth, forming two pieces. Then place in a container with some...
I'm currently away from home and was thinking that in the future it might be nice to be able to feed frozen food automatically.
I've found one reference involving a modified fridge/freezer but I think that is probably overkill.
I figure it should be possible to make something much smaller...
Okay does anyone know of easy open RO canisters? I can't mount mine with screws since I'm in a rental unit. So every time I want to change a filter I have to screw the housing to a scrap board. It's a pain. There must be a better way.

I'm thinking of setting up a little 2g pico tank at work with some gsp and other weeds. Anyone have an idea what would work for an ato? Must be absolutely bulletproof. I had a crappy homemade ato flood a Nano tank at my last job. Ha-ha. Almost zapped my pc... :)
