    Anyone heard of this stuff?

Hmm..... you might want to read this: https://char-grow.com/biochar-vs-charcoal-vs-activated-carbon Seems to me it would be good if you have mangroves or other plants. But does not seem so great if it is really just for filtration.

    Hydros X3 Controller review

Sounds like there might be a real contender for Apex. Note: Strongly suggest not putting anything critical on Wifi.

Doing away with the apex salinity probe for now?

Yes, WHOLESALE ONLY. (To businesses, or people like Erin / Rich who are/were involved in the business) Not regular public. If anyone knows someone who sells to the general public, I would be curious.

Doing away with the apex salinity probe for now?

Salinity probes are generally DC, not AC. As such, coupling/noise from nearby power wires and such should not make any difference. So I would not normally worry about routing of the wire. Although it still depends a lot on the quality of the actual circuit used in the sensor. Hence the "should...

Doing away with the apex salinity probe for now?

I am guessing they meant UV sterilized after filtering. But the real problem: I don't think any of those services sell directly to the public. That was my experience when I poked around with that and buying a giant SW storage tank.

Doing away with the apex salinity probe for now?

Did you clean it? But Apex salinity has never been reliable at all for me. Unless you have a small tank, salinity does not move that much anyway, so occasional hand testing is fine.

    Next Tank Options

Interesting that the IM has 3/4" glass, but CDA only has 1/2", RSR is in between at 5/8 or so. RSR adds a lot more parts in the sump, so is not a 1-1 comparison on price. Note that 3 sides = 3 sides to keep clean. IM seems like a great deal. Lower price, thicker glass, better low height...

    Power ... again

Regarding batteries: Lead Acid standard Car battery : Dangerous inside. Cannot deep-discharge at all. Deep cycle sealed lead acid : Good for inside, but you still cannot deep-discharge them very often or they die. Lithium-cobalt/nickel, like in laptops and cars : Expensive, high energy density...

    Power ... again

The problem with transfer switches is that there is a short period with zero power. That will reset Apex and such. Note that most equipment needs 24V, so you do not need an inverter for that, just a clean 24V output. (The battery is not exactly 24V, it varies, quite a bit) This is more of what...

Opinions on Philips CoralCare gen2 lights?

Now I regret tossing some of my AI primes in the trash in anger. Although for those, the main electronics were fried, so it would not have worked. The thing is, my AI primes had 3 problems: Fans died often. The UV burned out the lens plus caused LED board damage. The other board died as well...

The wind took my fence down. Power is fine though.

Opinions on Philips CoralCare gen2 lights?

Everything seems to be a compromise... Kessil : Has fans, plus a bit blue-centric for my taste. Nice shimmer. Radeon : Has fans. Great color for my tastes. UV longevity concerns. Straton + Coral care : Great lights, but discontinued, so while possible, some risk. Straton PRO : Available in...

Opinions on Philips CoralCare gen2 lights?

Appreciate the thought, but I am really planning long term. I have random spare lights for the short term.

    DIY Automated Alkalinity Tester

At any rate, the code is probably the easy part. The tricky part is the correct amount of water in/out, the correct amount of acid, keeping things clean, and so on. Will the measurements be repeatable on your system. My proposed solution to that was to make it part of the water exchange, and...

    DIY Automated Alkalinity Tester

As I understand, this is the curve. Not very linear. But a linear approximation is probably OK. I have never tried to calculate the error.

Opinions on Philips CoralCare gen2 lights?

Well ..... Looks like both the Phillips CoralCare and ATI Straton lights are discontinued, or headed that way. Some still out there for sale, but seems like a bad idea at this point. So a couple of options: 1) Just build my own. Done it before. Just have trouble finding time. 2) Go with low...

    DIY Automated Alkalinity Tester

For dkH, you can use a big lookup table with piecewise approximation from there. The problem is running all those tests to get the values for the table.

    DIY Automated Alkalinity Tester

It has been some 7 years since I looked into it, but I really remember that the dKH calculation was not that easy. Pretty non linear. It was reasonable pretty close to normal values for our tank. The problem was more with calibrating. You calibrate with RODI that is way out of the normal range...

    DIY Automated Alkalinity Tester

One thing to consider: Just automatically measure Alkalinity DRIFT. It is pretty hard to carefully calibrate and return a real Alk value. But you don't really need it. You use normal hand tests to get it right. All you need to know if it is drifting too far high/low. I was considering a DIY...
