Mr. Ugly

Past President
Greetings BAR!

It's getting to be that time of year again. Show your holiday spirit and come to the BAR Holiday Mixer and Dessert Potluck. Spend some time getting to know your fellow reefers. Enjoy food and light refreshments to be provided by BAR and a potluck dessert provided by... you! :)

Time: 1:00 PM
Date: Saturday 12/9/06
Place: Aquatic Specialties and Pets

Also for this meeting, we will be showing a movie, MacGillivray Freeman's Coral Reef Adventure.

Amazon.com reviews the movie as follows:

Like any IMAX movie, Coral Reef Adventure is so vivid, vast, and colorful that you can't help but be astonished by its visual splendor. But this undersea exploration has a deeper, more serious agenda as well, warning its viewers that the natural magnificence of the world's most impressive coral reefs is, in most cases, a mere 30 years away from extinction due to the devastating effects of global (and oceanic) warming. Whether or not that timeframe is accurate (and there's not enough solid science presented here to prove it either way), it's tragically obvious that we are in the process of losing entire ecosystems that cannot be replaced, and when you witness these awesome coral reefs in their still-thriving vitality, you experience a sense of urgent responsibility toward our stewardship of planet Earth. By showing us the commitment and potentially life-threatening work of reef explorers and world-class undersea cinematographers Howard and Michele Hall, the film provides an all-access pass to some of the most exotic, playful, and dangerous creatures in the ocean, presented with the kind of intense, almost three-dimensional clarity that can only be achieved in the IMAX format. And while the giant-screen awesomeness of IMAX is lost in translation to DVD, Coral Reef Adventure offers the best-to-date use (on disc 2 of this two-disc set) of High Definition DVD-ROM formatting. For PC users equipped with Windows XP and Windows Media Player 9 series (or later) software, the amazing images in Coral Reef Adventure achieve an almost life-like resolution. The ultimate conclusion remains: If we don't do something to protect these delicate, endangered wonders of nature, we will lose a part of ourselves.

A very nice movie, especially for the non-divers among us who have not visited these reefs in person.

IMPORTANT - To organize the event, we will need you to help by posting your RSVP to this thread.

If your membership has lapsed, this also would be a good time for renewal(contact dswong01 if you need help). So thank you in advance!

And... if you would like to participate in a Secret Santa gift exchange, please indicate so on your RSVP and we will match up your names at random. Secret Santa items should be something inexpensive and just for fun. It can be some home made cookies, holiday candies, a spare used powerhead, a scrap of live rock, a big frag of LE Watermelon Chalice.... ok, just kidding on the last one :)

Please be sure to RSVP by midnight, 11/30, so that we can make the necessary arrangements. And please bring a small dessert potluck item to share with your friends!

Happy Holidays from the BAR BOD :)

Steam Rice and fish sauce for meeh. LOL

Super. Thanks for the RSVP's guys.

Dannieboiz, so are you attending? Or is that only if there's rice and fish sauce? Let us know!

:)

I'm in for both :D Hope no one figures out where the RN gift came from

If it's fish sauce, triple bag in plastic and use a biohazard label :)

Ok, traditionally, Secret Santa is when you wrap a gift and label it with the name of the person it goes to. That person finds his gift from among all the other SS items, and tries to guess who it came from.

We don't necessarily have to stick with that format. We could just have each person track down their gift recipient at the party and exchange items directly. It's a mixer after all, and it's for people to have fun and maybe get to know someone they don't usually talk to at meetings.
