Freakin refractometer is driving me crazy

Whats up with this refractometer jumping around?

Calibrated it to 35ppm the other night and I come home today with reading 40ppm. I use the pinpoint salinity reference and I shake the crap out of it before I drop it in. Any thoughts?

Thanks
JD

Some of the brands I have seen have very loose adjustment screws so any movement can change them. I have used items like wax and various non drying resins to take care of it. heck, tar will work even.

Is it a newly purchased refractometer?

My anecdotal experience two different refractometers show that during the first few months of use, I need to calibrate with 35ppt fluid before every use. After the initial period, the refractometers settle and I can relax the calibration from before each use to every other week, then every month, etc. Whether this is true for all refractometers or why the calibration might need some time to set in is beyond me. :p

I just calibrated mine for the 1st time since I got it, over a year now, and was surprised that it was only off a few points...hehe. I used the calibrating fluid from the swap's giveaway bag :)
