Oh I'm sure it works...

Start focusing an expanded beam just outside the tank, deliver the beam through the wall at a reduced intensity, drill down to a small spot right into that Aptasia and I'm pretty sure we can obliterate them. I'd worry about the guys putting coherent beams with small cross sectional areas through the walls though.

Very cool!
One might even look forward to getting Aptasia with a toy like that.

But even with those tricky optics you mention, a 1W laser would pretty much instantly blind a fish that
happened to swim in front of it.

What I was thinking Tony, especially at the power needed to do this.

I'm also skeptical of the power ratings on these small hand held lasers.. I remember in the optics lab they had a 5W laser but that sucker was like 6 feet long, had tubes coming out of it going into a wall to the secret supply of keebler elves that power it, and everything... now they sell 3 watt hand held lasers that run off a couple AA batteries? Have lasers really advanced that much?

1 and 2 watt

I like how the page background is an image of an eye with a blue beam lancing towards it. Hopefully that is not how they suggest testing the lasers.
