Melev's DIY refugium light

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a local East Bay store that sells similar compact fluorescent flood bulbs that Melev uses in his fuge? Here's an example of the bulb: http://www.lightbulbsdirect.com/page/001/PROD/Reflectors/1P381951

I checked with Home Depot, it seems like the closest they can get are these bulbs: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100085820&N=10000003+530219+90021
They're actually a bit higher in wattage and put out 5500K, but I don't think they're hanging over my refugium.

That said, I'm definitely NOT electrically savvy so if someone can assure me that the uncovered HD spiral brand is relatively safe, I'll go for it. Otherwise, I'll need to keep hunting for the flood-light type brand.

Thanks!

Mike

Home Depot has this one, works perfect:

I believe the bulb costs around $9.

The $39 label you see on the package is not the price, that is the money they claim it saves of using 1 year compared to a regular bulb.

Well that's what I mean, $9 for a bulb is expensive, not in aquarium terms mind you :D I think the swirl bulbs go for $3-5 per bulb, which I don't get why, and it seems to be the brand that won the Home Depot contract so there's no other choice.

On that note, Costco does sell them for cheap at times. Got a pack of 24 swirl bulbs for $40 once.

BTW, if I do end up using the swirl bulb and not the flood-light version, is that a recipe for electrical destruction?
