There's a channel at the bottom connecting the reaction chamber to the drain pipe. You can see that in the third image in my original post.

No, it only needs to be above the sump's water level. There's no advantage to having it higher.

Longer hoses on venturis does help....most the time it makes them a little more quiet :)
