I agree. Simplifying is better in this case. I've never needed a check-valve on a return, and it's just one less thing to worry about. I'm pretty sure sumps these days are designed so that they can handle the back siphon until the return is out of water.

Like I said, it’s a nicity. So when you turn things off it doesn’t automatically fill up your sump.

Besides, it looks like all the plumbing came with the system. I don’t know if he would have been able to leave it off.

Maybe.
Except it gives you a false sense of security.
You test the overall setup now by turning off the pumps - it all works great.
Years later when a pump goes out and check valve sticks, it floods.
