I'm not sure how Favia's grow. Should it eventually "encrust" over the dead parts? Is the Favia (photo above) showing dead skeleton of the Favia?

In reference to the picture you posted, if you're referring to the dark green/brown spot in the middle, about 25% of the frag - that looks like a dead part that algae has taken over...Not quite sure I see anything else that could be referred to as a "dark brown mouth in the middle"

They should encrust even over their own skeleton/dead part
