I wouldn't, the sponges have chemicals in them that keep them from drying out in the package. If you rinse them under running water you will see they turn the water yellow. It would be risky to use in your tank.

Is this for inside the tank or the outside?

If you can find the type that has a plastic abrasive fabric on the outside and a cheezy sponge on the inside (old school) you can remove the sponge and use the sock, I usually find those at the dollar store.

Or you can use those melamine blocks (magic eraser) those work as well.

I think Aquarium Concepts has the Mighty Magnet socks in stock and they rock for cleaning algae (even if you use it as a glove for manual cleaning)

I'll be in your area tomorrow and can drop something by if you'd like.
