    Urchins

I have three black spine urchins (rock urchins?) for free. They are NOT long spine urchins - just generic black urchins about the size of little cutie oranges. They haven’t scratched my acrylic, and are great cleaners, but do occasionally taste the encrusting edge of corals as they pass by...

    Temperature Survey

Hui’s salinity survey inspired me to make a temp survey - I expect this one to maybe have a wider range of results? I keep mine fairly low, in the 75-77 range. But have no particular reason for this. Would love to hear your reasoning and/or read any articles or anecdotes you’d like to share...

Anyone know what is making these sand tubes?

They are showing up all over the tank - my goby carries them around sometimes. They are all of similar size - perfectly circular and hollow inside like a straw. They hold their shape but crumble back into normal sand easily.

Free Stuff, dry rock, test kits, phyto culture kit

Clearing out the garage this week. Have a full garbage can of dry rock, free for any newbies. Also have a bunch of random stuff, none of the test kits are expired. Some are used a little but should have plenty of tests left: Tunze grabber arm Michael @MichaelB Balling set @Turkeysammich...

    Free tank w/ sump - 90g

I have this 48x18x24 90g tank that Kenny gave me for my tank transfer. Silicone looks kinda rough but it holds water. Includes acrylic sump. I need the space in the garage - come get it before this weekend or it goes you know where! Located San Rafael.

Tank Cam / Sump Cam recommendations

Finally getting around to putting doors on my tank stand (extruded aluminum) and am going to really miss being able to just glance at everything in the sump. But sadly, for the family's sake, it must be done. Looking for recommendations - both for sump and potentially for the DT (with an orange...

    Help with DSLR settings.

Decided to play around with my wife’s Canon EOS 70D, but not getting very good pics. She has a few lenses, these were taken with a 24-100mm AF. Pics just seem really dark, despite being taken when the tank is at its brightest. I am totally clueless with photography and just have everything on...

    Bean Animal issues

I built a fairly standard bean animal style drain in an external overflow box. Pretty much identical to this, with a tall/open emergency drain (left), a secondary drain with an upside down elbow, and a primary drain with an upside down elbow: On mine, water comes in via the weir across the...

    Derek's 225g - Stressing over Anemones

This tank was started as a reboot in May 2023. Previous tank was 1yr old, and experienced a nasty dino/bacterial crash a couple months after a tank upgrade earlier this year (https://bareefers.org/forum/threads/urgent-advice-and-live-rock-needed-dino-lyngbya-tank-crash.33717/#post-482310). It...

    Black Urchin ID

I got 9-10 of these guys with some TBS live rock. They started around nickel to quarter sized and have grown to the size of lemons in just a couple of months. I don’t think they are “long spine” urchins as they lack the red spot and don’t have long spines. Also don’t seem to match the pictures...

    Mantis Shrimp hitchhiker

Found a little mantis shrimp in my tank - 100% positive ID. He’s about 1.5” long. Anyone have any experience with these, or recommendations on how to catch him? How long until the apocalypse?

    Bristletooth Tang and Dusky Wrasse

Looking to potentially give away my 3” two spot bristletooth tang, and a female dusky wrasse also around 3”. Both healthy, good eaters. Both eat frozen, flake, pellets, and nori. I have them in a separate tank right now because of my reset, and just looking to maybe reduce my bio load some...

Urgent advice (and live rock) needed- Dino/Lyngbya tank crash

I recently upgraded my tank - from a 525xl to a 225g peninsula. I was going to start a tank journal (and still intend to) to document things but have found myself in an epic dino battle about 6 weeks in. To cut to the chase - I had an outbreak of Ostreopsis, which I easily defeated with UV. The...

Cooking Dry Rock for tank upgrade

I have been cooking up some dry rock for my tank upgrade for a few weeks now. I'm using a 40gal brute can with a heater and some gentle flow. I've seeded it with rocks from @dandemeyere , @CaptainB , and @under_water_ninja. Thrown in some pods and a little phyto and raw ammonia to get things...

Flow Question for MP40/MP60 folks - Peninsula tank

Hello - I am planning flow for a 72x30x24 peninsula (225g) with Eurobracing, and want to try and use Vortech pumps exclusively for the sake of wire management, but don't have a lot of experience with mobius or programming multiple Vortech pumps. Top down view below - I plan on 2x MP40s (or maybe...

    Kennnnyyyyy

Swung by High Tide for the first time today and glad I did! It’s nice to have a good reef shop a bit closer than AC or Neptune. Especially one that will QT fish locally - we need to support and start ordering all of our fish at High Tide! Kenny is a cool guy and we spent a good bit of time...

    Clarisea Emergency

My UPS shipment from BRS is of course late and MIA and we are about to go on vacation with a roll nearly empty… Does anyone know a local LFS selling filter rolls for the Clarisea SK-5000? Or anyone local willing to sell me one? We leave in the morning - TY TY!

    Derek's 130gal (525xl)

Hello - I am new to the hobby, starting a Red Sea 170 in February when a friend from the track convinced me I needed another money-sink of a hobby. As a sidenote - if you race/track motorcycles or are thinking about it, hit me up! I have been riding for many years and this is my other hobby...

    New member in San Rafael

Hello - I started a Reefer170 back in February, and have really fallen hard for the hobby. I just recently upgraded to a 525xl (my old stuff is in the sale forums!) and am in the process of stocking it. I did full a custom plumbing and sump and will start a build thread soon. I have a couple...
