    Salifert Calcium Test Kit Question

I started using the Salifert Calcium test kit. Is this correct? Ca-1 is the indicator dye (Patton and Reeder’s indicator?) You need enough to support the complexometric titration and attached to all of the metal ions, so at least a level spoonful, but it is ok to have a little too much. It...

    Chaeto Growth with Kessil H380

Sharing some progress on my Chaeto growth. This picture shows 6 weeks for growth with my Kessil H380. The sump on the LEFT (edited) is how my Chaeto had been for months: not really growing. In the past, I had good growth with a 12W Home Depot Daylight LED floodlight, but last year it stopped...

Plastic Cutting Board for Glass Tank Bottom?

I read about people buying custom plastic cutting boards from plasticcuttingboards.com in order to protect the bottom of their glass tanks. I am a little nervous about glass in earthquake country. Anyone know anyone who tried this? Is it really add some protection in an earthquake or if you...

    Thinking about a new tank....

My 125G acrylic is showing its age (scratches and crazing). I want to move to a glass rimless tank. I am going to move it to the living room. Here is what I am thinking, but I am curious what others will say: 60"x18"x24" 112G Glass Rimless, low iron front (maybe the right side), black back. I...

    Could this Acrylic Tank Fail?

125G Custom Acrylic tank. I noticed these cracks today. One of the left and one on the right. The one on the left is worse. They were not there a couple of weeks ago. The tank is level from left to right, but the house must have settled this winter because it is a little out of level from front...

    New Tunze Osmolator is Flakey

Very frustrated. I bought a new Tunze 3155 and it had been very unreliable. Problem 1: It would work for a day to two fine, but eventually the alarm would go off. I figured maybe the humidity under the tank was causing issues with the controller, so I mounted the controller outside of the...

    Male or Female Mandarin?

Is this a female red mandarin dragonet (Synchiropus splendidus)? She does not have the spike as shown on the male in the bottom photo, right? I am asking because I thought I read somewhere a long time ago that juveniles were hard to sex because the males develop the spike later, but I am not sure.

    Ray's 125G Softie Tank

Posting a little video showing where my tank is now. This tank was a cuttlefish tank for about a year then a seahorse tank for a few years. Now it's your basic reef tank with mainly softies. I have had the corals for a long time, but the fish have been added more recently.

Anyone know a source of Botryocladia?

Also called Red Grape Kelp (sometime Red Grape Caulerpa but its not a Caulerpa). I see it out-of-stock on the few places online I used to get it. I used to have a tank full of it.

    Yellow Tang Issue

After speaking to a few knowledgeable people (you know who you are), I added three same sized juvenile yellow tangs at the same time to my 125G. One was killed by my female clown (who is now in a different tank). So I was left with 2. They seemed find for a couple of weeks, but one of them has...

    Chaeto (morpha)

This was about 1/2 of what was in my refugium. If anyone ever needs any, I have it (although it has a fair amount of bristle worms in it).

    Substrate for Pistol Shrimp/Goby Pair

Trying to do some research on the a substrate that works for a pistol shrimp. About 4" of variable sized sand is what I am seeing. I don't see the perfect out of the box solution, but for my 30"x12" 29G, I am thinking about 15lbs of CaribSea SEAFLOR Super Reef mixed with 30lbs of CaribSea...

    Clowns Not Eating

I have a mating pair of Perculas that I have since 2011. They have been in my 125G for 3.5 years and since the last seahorse died about 1.5 years ago, they have had the tank mainly to themselves. Last week I started adding some new fish. I added 3 juvenile yellow tangs at the same time last...

    Ray's LPS Reboot

Hi All. It's been a while since I have been active, but my soft coral tank is still going strong. The tank has housed sea horses for that last few years, but alas, the last two recently died. I am therefore thinking about a reboot of the tank. I am thinking about a minimalist rock approach with...

    Any one have Diamox (Acetazolamide)?

I have a seahorse that has external gas bubble disease. I have been using neomycin sulfate and triple sulfa and they don't seem to be working.

    Waterproofing Stand

I am getting ready to move my tank back into my family room (the floors are finally refinished). I was thinking about putting some type of sealer inside the stand on the bottom in order to keep any sump spills from draining onto the new floor. Someone recommended Pond Coat/Rubber Coat from...

    Cracked Impeller

My skimmer stopped working yesterday. Here's the culprit. Any idea what causes this or how to prevent it? Every few months I soak my pumps in a vinegar solution to clean them.

    Skunk Cleaner Died

I have had two skunk cleaners for a year. I got them as large adults (fully grown probably). THey seemed to get along well and were always carrying eggs. Then one day one of them died. Not sure how long they live. Nothing else seemed to die. The one who died did seem to loose interest in food...

Staining the floors in the room with a tank

We are thinking about replacing our carpet and adding hardwood floors in our family room. This means ripping up the carpet and sanding and staining the new floors. We stained the back rooms last year and the tank was fine even though the house did smell for several days. This time, however, it...
