Bio:

My name is Scott Fellman, and I’m the consummate “fish nerd”! I bleed saltwater! And yes, I think there’s a lot of freshwater in there, too!

Much of my life centers around tweaking my protein skimmer, scraping algae, cleaning up spills, or figuring out how to unglue my fingers. I’ve been keeping marine aquariums since I was a kid, and during that time, I have maintained all sorts of aquariums, fish bowls, plastic boxes, and just about anything that can hold water. My passions are aquascaping and marine biotope aquariums. I love this hobby and the crazy people in it!

I’ve mentored fellow hobbyists since 2002 on Bob Fenner’s WetWebMedia.com site, and I was Co-Editor of WWM’s Conscientious Aquarist online magazine for a couple of years. I served as president the Marine Aquarium Society of Los Angeles County, in 2006. I’ve written a number of articles for Freshwater and Marine Aquarium Magazine, Ultramarine UK, Tropical Fish Hobbyist, Marine Fish and Reef USA Annual, “C” Journal, and other online venues, such as Reef Addicts and Reefs.com. I write a weekly blog on the Reef Builders web site, where I blog on a variety of reef-related topics.

In addition to my writing, I have racked up the frequent-flyer miles, travelling all over the U.S. and internationally, speaking at clubs and events about all sorts of reef-and freshwater aquarium-related stuff. I presented at MACNA XIX in Pittsburgh, IMAC 2008 in Chicago, MACNA XX in Atlanta, and MACNA XI in Atlantic City, MACNA XXII in Orlando, MACNA XXII in Des Moines, MACNA XXIII in Dallas, as well as IMAC West in Long Beach, and Reef-a-Palooza!  I’m really trying to complete a book on marine biotope aquaria and aquascaping before this century is over, and I’m sure my aquarium is due for a water change at some point!

I am partner in a Los Angeles-based online marine livestock retailer, Unique Corals, marketing sustainably collected, aquacultured, and captive propagated corals, fishes, and invertebrate.

When I’m not trying to replicate the ocean in my aquariums, I’m usually surfing in it at my local beach, dining at new restaurants  (another great love), watching ice hockey, or SCUBA diving.

Unfortunately, Brandie and I won't be making it to this meet. It's her niece's birthday that day. :(

Anyway, hope you guys have fun. Will we be having a meet in December?

BAR is proud to announce Unique Corals will be offering a exclusive 10% discount for members at November's meeting...woot !

That is an awesome deal - thanks, Scott and Jim! How does it work? Do we each place an individual order at uniquecorals.com and make a note that the order is to be picked up at the BAR meeting on Nov. 10th? What is the deadline for ordering?

Sorry for the confusion guys ! Scott will be shipping some corals to be raffled at the November 10th meeting.

Checkout www.uniquecorals.com to see a sample of what Scott will have at the talk.

It was a brilliant talk! Scott engaged the audience extremely well, and was funny to boot.

My personal favorite highlights:
1. The exaggerated hyperbole comparison of the costs of water changes to buying (or leasing?) a Ferrari. Something to consider bringing up the next time you are asking for a raise. :D
2. The personal anecdote about the rare Centropyge that was originally available for $80 then escalated to $1400.
3. The rapport with the audience, incorporating the tank setup of various attendees, and the banter with Michelle.

Oh, and there was some actual information about nutrient export, but that was just icing on the cake. ;)

Very good presentation. I'm stoked (flashback to 70's surfer talk) to start up an ATS - Aptasia turf scrubber! J/K ;)

Which reminds me, did he mention the other ATS (algae turf scrubber)? Anybody doing that?

Scott also talked about Potassium issues. What corals did he say benefited by the addition of Potassium?

missed the meeting, damn cold... but did he actually suggest an aiptasia "scrubber"?? I remember Calfo suggested a runway of aiptasia back in the day when I asked him about potential contamination into the display he said "yeah well you need to look out for that" but never mentioned how. If Scott does promote aiptasia did he give any helpful hints on not infecting one's display?

John- I think Scott was talking sps corals "coloring" back up with the supplementation of potassium.

Mike- Scott did refer to Calfo's use of a aptasia runway as a means for nutrient export...but in jest. :D

why wait? They are having a sale next weekend, just drive down.

...with the cost of gas it's probably cheaper to just place a order and split the shipping with somebody.

Atleast w/RAP we can kill two birds with one stone. :)
