Less wasteful sand rinsing?

I have a bunch of new sand I need to rinse for my new tank, but sticking a hose in a bucket and letting it overflow until it's clean seems overly wasteful in the drought we're in...

At the end of the day the amount of water is probably negligible... But still feels wrong. I've also never had the best luck with the method.

When I broke down my old tank I wanted to move some sand over to the tank I'm holding fish in, for my wrasse. I didn't want to bring all the junk, so I actually scooped sand with a plastic colander and sifted it into a bin under water. This worked surprisingly well, as the fine junk got suspended in the water, and the bin was full of surprisingly clean sand. I may try this method on the new sand.

Anyone have a different way of rinsing new sand?

How big are the sand grains? You could always get a mesh screen of smaller size of sift out the dust first before rinsing. Lot of work though.
