High Tide Aquatics

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium with a few friends this weekend, armed only with a 100mm macro lens and a very aged slr:

There are a bunch of young/baby sea turtles in their "ZOMG, GLOBAL WARMING WILL KILL US ALL!" exhibit, next to the currently-empty outer ocean tank.

Wow, awesome pictures. Makes me jealous you can do so much with a "very aged slr" than I can do with a brand new camera.. oh well I have my memory of trips to the MBA, although I can't seem to find those pictures either :D

Wow, the million gallon exhibit is empty?! I was just there in the spring... watching large schools of fish swim. The green sea turtles were born at Sea World in San Diego. They had a clutch of 82 baby turtles born in November--wow!

Wow dude you take some GREAT photos! I have tried many times to shoot at the MBA but traffic, lack of exp and poor choice of shots prevent me from posting greatness. I shot a few vids actually in April.

They just closed it down a couple weeks ago. Something to do with the tiles that line the exhibit needing to be refurbished if I got the gist of it correctly.

Matt, thanks for letting us know why the giant exhibit is closed. I searched the MBA aquarium and couldn't find any information about why the Outer Bay is shut down. Talk about a large water change!

Volunteer person @ MBA said the turtles had done something to the tiles lining the back walls? Not sure how accurate, but 2 independent volunteers said July 1 for opening day. Or by then at least.

Jess- what'd you do to negate the glare on the exhibits?

I got the lens as close to the glass as possible, right up against it if I could. That lens can focus at about 6" from the front, which makes shooting in some of the narrow tanks (I'm lookin at you, sea dragons!) fairly doable. :)

Very nice. And having a close focus lens there has to help a lot. I always feel bad trying to take a shot and blocking the light at the same time (and everyone else's view).
