    Cyanobacteria growing in torch?

The issue seems to have resolved itself, either due to the flow or the coral expelling it. I’ll check on it tomorrow and update if the issue persists.

    Cyanobacteria growing in torch?

This afternoon I checked on my (relatively) new torch and noticed it was irritated and had two strands of something growing out of it. It looks like cyanobacteria, which showed up in my tank briefly a few days ago on the sandbed before my goby cleaned it out. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't...

    Strange rock flower issue

Update: he jumped off the lid and landed right next to my mushroom. Thanks for the advice anyway, I'll keep this in mind if this ever happens again.

    Strange rock flower issue

Earlier today, when I was away from the tank, a filter sock clogged and the water level rose to the point that it was touching my screen top. The resulting salinity issue is being dealt with, but during the clog one of my particularly mobile rock flowers (he was living on the side glass...

    Hawkfish sitting on mp40

So today, I just purchased a new longnose hawkfish, and as part of the acclimation process I turned off my powerheads (there were other fish too). Now, his favorite spot is on top of the MP40. I don't want to turn it on for fear of him being sucked on to it. Is it ok for him to sit there or do I...

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

Despite the new wrasse, the planaria were starting to really take over, so I decided to get a little bit more aggressive with a flatworm eXit treatment. I did all the recommendations on the package, siphoned out all of the visible planaria, had about 20 gallons of mixed water on hand, a full...

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

I can’t find any pics, but it was one large white pimple/bump thing that looked like a raspberry. The only disease I could find online that looked like it was lynphocystitis. There were no other apparent symptoms other then this bump and the smaller ones which disappeared a few days after my...

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

Due to real life crap taking over, the tank, and moreso websites like this have been pushed to the back burner. I have a few new updates from the last couple months: Nitrates are consistently >5 ppm, phosphates are still undetectable. KH is always somewhere between 8-8.3. Today it was at 8.1...

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

Good news and bad news for today's update. Good news: Nitrate is coming down (~10 ppm), I can see the chaeto pearling which I'm pretty sure is a good sign, and I'm using a toothbrush and filter socks to manually remove the cyanobacteria from the tank. Going to continue to do this for several...

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

When I turn off my return pump, the return line starts to siphon down into the sump. Since the Red Sea tanks have a large return nozzle (?) into the tank, it sucked a fish in while it was siphoning before I broke the siphon by moving it above the water line. (Note I keep the return nozzle...

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

So I have been skimming normally, running my fuge, and running carbon while feeding normally as well. New carbon block + canister is coming today, Nitrates are below 20, but phosphates are still 0. Cyano is still going strong, but all of my zoa colonies except for 1 have at least one open polyp...

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

So I should add another canister with a 1 micron carbon block? Is it worth the extra $50 or so to add a second DI canister, or will that not be necessary?

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

RODI source water using a 4 stage BRS 75 gpd unit. Fuge was started on Thursday, haven’t noticed any growth yet but there might be some. I actually do have corals that I forgot to mention, and the main reason I want to get rid of this quickly is because they are bothering my zoanthids. How long...

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

How do I bring up my po4? Should I dose it or are there foods that contain high po4? As for my system, 55 gallon tank with 11 gallon sump, 50 lbs dry rock, filtration is nyos quantum skimmer, refugium added on Thursday, and a media reactor I added last night. Currently have 2x 1” clownfish, 1x...

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

No gfo. I double checked several days in a row (albeit the same test kit, so that could be the issue) with the salifert test kit and I couldn't detect any. I dosed nopox during the cycling period but haven't for at least 3 weeks. Not currently dosing anything, just feeding.

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

po4 is 0 on the salifert test kit. I will set my skimmer to run wet. I have a bag of carbon that I was using to clear up the tank when starting, I'll swap it out now. Thanks for the advice.

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

I wouldn’t call it a film. It certainly is red, and some it will come off if I pull it off or shake the plug, but I wouldn’t say it comes off easy. It’s difficult to photograph due to the lightning but I tried. It’s thicker then in the photo, and it covers all of the rock and about 1/2 of the...

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

So, now we hit the hard part of keeping any tank, with a rather depressing update: I removed my socks, and then about week later I noticed a brown-red algae like substance growing over my rocks and corals. I did a water test and my nitrates were incredibly high, around 20. I realised that my...

BlueCheese3's first tank: Red Sea reefer 250

I returned to my tank after a week in Bonaire for a scuba trip (which an untimely illness unfortunately turned into a snorkel trip.) Most everything was the same, one of the zoas has a new mini-polyp. Parameters were good, so I decided it was time for more livestock! I took a trip down to...
