Dave (and Emily's) 24 gallon journal

Bubbles the Mandarin goby passed away. Not sure if he was sick but seemed fine and then he was not. Was 1 year and ~10 months old. Now there's just Wigglebutt the Clownfish and a Pygmy Cherub.

It's just crazy, water temps reaching 90°F in some places

Starfish wasting disease in the Pacific

Really interesting but unsettling article about a mysterious malady killing lots of starfish in the ocean. https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/03/04/sea-star-wasting-disease-starfish/

Dave (and Emily's) 24 gallon journal

Unfortunately found the Royal Gramma ('Amethyst') floating on the bottom on its side. RIP. Didn't see any detectable infection/damage/parasites. Was about 3 in. in length could be old age or just some sickness. Will need to monitor the other three fish.

    Dinoflagellates: Who has beat them?

I have a bottle leftover from Dec.; I’m not dosing anymore so you can have it.

Photo was taken just before New Years, with some "aquarium goggles" as an improv filter.

Developed a green cyano outbreak a couple weeks after the Dinos receeded. Tried multiple blackouts, dosing Microbacter, substrate siphoning, and water changes. Still blooming. Finally had to dose with chemiclean, and now the cyano has receded. Good news though, the elegance came back even...

Hobby Costs; Can they be lower?

I'm just glad I live in a mild, temperate climate where a bomb cyclone just brings a ton of rain and NOT subzero temps.

What reefing mistakes did you make last year? Let's all learn!

Moved my 24 gallon tank downstairs, killed part of a coral (Pocillopora) because I'd left it partially sticking out of the bucket water. Also didn't plan for the disruption of the substrate leading to a Dino and currently cyano bloom.

Wednesday storm supposed to be worse

Some places are out of sand and bags; the Fremont maintenance center was pretty low on sand when I was there.

Biggest hotel aquarium in the world explodes

Apparently a few fish/snails/etc. survived in the water that collected in the basement.

    Transferring amphipods from Refugium

He (the Mandarin) does seem to eat roe but appears to favor TDO pellets (perhaps he was raised on them). Also feed him frozen copepods (PE calamus for example). I probably shouldn't be too concerned because he seems happy and not starving.

    Transferring amphipods from Refugium

If I had significantly larger tank I wouldn't worry as much. But I worry because 24 gallons is lower than 30-50 gallon recommended tank size for a Mandarin. And now that's it's freezing outside I've stopped culturing pods, since the bucket has to live in the garage. The Mandarin I have is...

    Transferring amphipods from Refugium

I seed the tank and refugium with Tisbe pods (really small, little white specs on the glass when fully grown, the juveniles are microscopic). The amphipods are noticeably larger (you can make out legs for example). Cleaning out the refugium doesn't seem a great choice because the amphipods...

    Transferring amphipods from Refugium

I have a robust population of amphipods in the refugium (HOB hanging on the back of an all-in-one 24 gallon). What are people's preferred method for transferring them to the display? Unfortunately, the HOB-refugium is just a converted/modded filter that outputs into the back compartment; the...

    Dinoflagellates: Who has beat them?

I was able to combat a small cell amphidium bloom with blackouts, UV, and dosing with microbacter and silica (like you did).

Dave (and Emily's) 24 gallon journal

An update. 1) had a big dino bloom after the move (under the scope a lot of fast moving small ones, so probably Ostreopsis or Amphidinium small cell (I'm leaning towards Amphidinium because of the lack of bubbles, lack of long strands, and fast, linear swimming movement). Followed this guide...
