Adding salt to the tank.

In a pinch is it OK to put salt directly in the sump?
My skimmer went postal and dumped a bunch of water out of the tank.
Then my auto top off did it's job and added some nice RO water.
My salinity was 1.026 and is now 1.024.
I could also put salt in the ATO reservoir...

I've read that a fast increase in salinity is much more detrimental than a fast decrease. It might be better to take your time and slowly raise it back.

I don't think 1.024 is too bad. I'd go ahead and raise it slowly too, although in the past I have added small amounts of strait salt to a mixing chamber.

I had something simlar happen to me once. I did my 10% water changes over the next couple weeks with a higher salinity to level it out.

Wow, ok, that explains why my corals look terrible right now. I added a cup and a half of salt directly to the sump...which I'm guessing is more than a pinch.

JAR, a bit OT, but what kind of skimmer do you have? I didn't realize a skimmer could do that! Of course, it might be because I have a small CPR BakPak.
