Can a longer photoperiod compensate for weak lights?

as per my thread about switching from leds to halides....

Before I can get that done, will a longer photoperiod help compensate for weak lights?

I'm on time of use so my lights come on at 6pm until 2am or so

I would think not. It's a matter of light penetration and keeping them on longer just means they are not penetrating for even longer. You';d end up with more algae and not much benefit. I don't know what your lights are, but it sounds like you'd be better off moving corals than leaving the lights on longer.

What Bruce said. I'd also get a hold of your temp swings. If your thermostats are inaccurate, your tank may be hitting higher than 83*. I believe 83+ starts to be the death temp for lots of reef inhabitants. If you don't have a controller already, get a Ranco dual. Solid as a rock and you can buy them prewired if needed.
