Nursing a favia

So I have a question for the old timers out there. I'm nursing this favia and was wondering if as this grows back will the old skeleton be an issue or helpful or what? Should I harvest the polyps that are still fighting and put them on some clean rock or as they improve will they just grow over the old skeleton? I know there probably aren't many actual experiences but I figured I'd ask.

From what I've read you should epoxie over the old coral making it a smooth surface. That way the coral can encrust better over the old skeleton.

i glued a square shaped frag to some rockwork thinking it would encrust nicely...well, it encrusted, but you can still see the square from the original frag...if i would have known earlier i would have done what iani said..IME it grows faster once it hits a flat plane....
