Oscillating water device back when the return pump from the sump was the primary source of water movement in a tank, IIRC had some type of gearing system in it that switched the direction of the water from one outlet to the other, apparently quite prone to gunking up and requiring regular cleaning, also greatly reduced total flow simply because of how it worked. Never had one myself, although they were about when I first got in the hobby, closest I got was the one that used a motor to spin piece of PVC with one outlet so that it went in one of 4 directions, can't remember the name of it off the top of my head right now.
