After 2 weeks in freezing FREEZING Missisauga (near Toronto), I'm back to see that my "Daily Double" auto feeder (plus random flake additions from my mother in law) has definitely exploded my hair algae farm. We're talking enough to make several clown wigs with!
The aiptasia had a field day as well. Holy crap.
I'm amazed that simply 2 weeks of neglect can screw up your tank! One thing I forgot as well was that my heater is in my sump so when the pump ran dry, so did the heat to the main tank. I had "preloaded" the sump by filling it to the VERY TOP with RO water. My evaporation was not that severe leading up to the vacation, so I figured it would be OK. I even disabled my auto-top off kalk reactor (not really auto-top, but timed additions) because my MIL was staying at our place and it would be too hard to explain to her how to fix things.
Surprisingly nothing that I could see had died. In fact, the softies loved the sewer like environment and look really good, though the one sps I have turned from brown/purple to brown/white.
