Those look like the aiptasia I have in my tank. Luckily my fish have taken care of it. I do have a bunch in the sump though. I'm not sure if it's something you want to spread around.

66 degree temp for multiple days sounds like much bigger problem then an alk swing from 9 to 7.

I would also consider a second heater not on the apex. I use a ranco for my second heater.

That is some good xray vision that you have. haha. @Bigfish if there are membranes hiding back there you should definitely change them and the rest of the prefilters as well.
