Volunteer thread is here: https://www.bareefers.org/forum/threads/volunteer-thread-for-4-26-frag-swap.40138/

Due to issues in the last couple frag swaps, we've made some changes going forward. TL;DR usernames on cups will be heavily enforced, and there will be quite a bit more scrutiny surrounding coral + bonus coral check-in.

How does a BAR Frag Swap Work? (This post is older, but a good intro to how swaps work for those of you who haven’t been to one yet (some details have changed))

There will be bonus rounds, and a list of bonus/ultra coral can be found here: https://www.bareefers.org/forum/threads/complete-bonus-coral-list-2026.38411/ This will BE Updated Before The Swap

Ineligible corals:

Please note that Captain Jerks, Grandis Palys, Brown button palythoas, nuclear green palythoas, and all species of caulerpa algae are BANNED. We're trying to limit the proliferation of these corals, given their higher likelihood of palytoxin, so we will not accept these as frags for the swap, and request they not be brought as freebies. Possession of Caulerpa algae is banned by the state of California.

Valid corals:
  • Corals MUST be in clear plastic containers, that includes lids and sides, so no styrofoam. Plastic bags will not be allowed.
  • Corals MUST be labeled with at the very least a description (e.g., name and/or color + coral type), and your username. The approximate lighting level they are under can be helpful.
    • PLEASE LABEL THE LID OF THE CONTAINERS. Everyone will look down on them, so it makes it easier.
  • Corals should be healthy and pest-free. While we should assume everything could have hidden pests, if your frag plug has Aiptasia or signs of pests, it will not be accepted.
  • Frag sizes you should use will vary. I like to say "what kind of frag would you like to see" and use that as a guideline for how much/how big.
  • There's always a debate about mounted versus unmounted corals, and that probably will never get settled, as a result no requirement either way.
  • Things like anemones are ok if they're of a desirable nature, i.e., bubble tips, maxi-mini carpets, NOT Aiptasia.
  • Sponges are not valid frags, and neither is macroalgae, but these—with the exception of Caulerpa—can be brought for the freebie table.
    • Caulerpa species, which are now illegal, carry a hefty fine to possess or sell in CA.
Valid bonus/ultra corals:
  • MUST be labeled clearly and cleared before the frag swap.
    • Registration and coral running are hectic; to be fair to everyone, we cannot make spot decisions at the swap.
  • If you think your coral/anemone/etc. should be on the bonus/Ultra list, ask/Submit beforehand.
  • Ultra list process submissions here: To Be Updated

Good morning, I have been in the hobby now for about 9 months. I still do not have corals big enough to frag. Anyone have some they are able to donate on my behalf for the swap? Once my corals get big enough to frag, I can definitely pay it back. Thanks in advance if you can help me out.

Tossing this out there..
If members purchase frags at LFs or get corals from other members the same day should they document chain of custody on the frag containers?
Remember to dip dip and dip your new corals. Be observant use a magnifyer or phone zoom in on corals plus the dip water. Hopefully just pods & brittle stars. Micro brittle stars can totally be saved if you suck them out sooner then later and rince off great little surprises! Personally I cut or pull the frag plug off since unwanted pests or eggs can hide especially if there's gaps wear the brittle stars usually hide..
Have fun
Thanks to the board, volunteers and sponsors for their generosity and time organizing this event!! Fun fun fun

It would be good information in a perfect setup. Yet remember how small most of these cups are. Just having enough room to include the required information is challenging for some. Chain of custody wouldn't be practical in most cases. If member who contributed it name is on the cup as required. We would likely be able to inquire that information from them in the remote possibility that was ever required.
