    Clean up crew lifespans?

My tuxedo urchins have done ok - I think I’ve had some maybe 6 years now. I have a mix of wild and captive bred. I haven’t tried other species.

    Newbie 8g tank

Can you replace the (glass?) lid with a mesh screen to increase gas exhange? The pH is too low (7.4) which reinforces @phc567 hypothesis that oxygen is low /CO2 is high because it could cause low pH. I guess an air bubbler would work with the glass lid but they are noisy and probably not a good...

Hobby ICP study - Evaluating the Repeatability and Differences between ICP Tests

Thanks @Thales for sharing this study! The mathematical rigor really helps with perspective. Did you send out sterilized salt water samples? I wonder if there is a difference between samples that have been sitting in the collection vial for different amounts of time - I usually overnight my...

Handheld ph meter recommendation for kalk reservoir

Also wanted to say I recently bought a Hanna "HI98103 Checker pH Tester with 0.1 pH Resolution" hand-held pH meter, and it works pretty well for the cost ($38).

Handheld ph meter recommendation for kalk reservoir

I agree, monitoring pH is a safeguard when you are dosing stuff that affects it. You can program a fail-safe to shut off the kalkwasser, etc if pH is above a set point, and you can know when your dosing pumps are failing. I have had a number of BRS pumps that worked great for many years (I think...

Is there a possibility this doser is allowing a siphon?

That’s ok. It’s the output line, it will empty partially or even fully if your line output is above the water line. Mine looks the same.

    Needing Prayers

Sorry to hear she didn't qualify for the transplant. It's so tough to take care of parents and watch them struggle with their illness and the medical system. I hope your family finds a resolution soon and that it brings you all closer together.

Torch flesh peeling back from the bottom?

Well, if anyone wants to give me samples of any of their bugs, I can take clear photos under the microscope. It would really help me put together a collection of bug ID photos. It’s looking like new bugs are coming in, and more bugs thanks to mariculture and worsening ocean health, and they are...

Torch flesh peeling back from the bottom?

I'm also hearing about a "black plague" affecting acros, apparently turns the flesh around the base black, and it especially affects microclados (shortcakes, pink lemonade, etc) has anyone experienced this yet and did in come in on other acros, other frags, inverts?

Torch flesh peeling back from the bottom?

Do you have a photo of the "white bugs on euphyllia" - do you know where you might have gotten them? I am putting together pest photos so if anyone has any coral pest photos they want to share, please DM me (no questions asked :)

    Malaysian Acros?

Just wanted to update that the last of my speciosa frags from that July 2022 shipment died. None of them were happy to be in captivity. It would really help to know where these corals came from so we could adjust their environment. It’s possible they need to be isolated from other corals until...

PE Mysis - Not their favorite food? - What does everyone feed? (Updated)

Marine fish can’t make their own EPA or DHA (unlike freshwater fish) so if you are feeding foods low in those fatty acids it could help to add Selcon. Not all ornamental fish food companies are transparent with nutrition facts so sometimes the only way to know if you aren’t feeding enough EPA or...

    Torch or hammer

Because it resembles a frogspawn, but has very few branching tentacles like a torch, it has me guessing torchspawn (torch-frogspawn hybrid) https://reefbuilders.com/2020/07/22/hybrid-euphyllia-coral-are-more-common-than-we-think/ But it could be a cristata hybrid too. Would need better photos...

    Fiji is opening again

Yea does look like a Paletta pink tip. The one in the upper left looks like the OG blue acro (grown by @anathema) that was going around the club for a while. Wonder if anyone still has a piece of it?

    Fiji is opening again

It’s still a compact colony but it’s growing most similarly to spathulata that I have grown out from wild via LiveAquaria divers’ den. The wild spath I grew out is raspberry with a green rim tho.

    Fiji is opening again

So shouldn’t we already have plenty of these “colorful and hardy” corals around that were imported from Fiji before 2017? And which ones are they?

    Apex issue thread

Oh - figured out if I really tighten the case screws, the o-ring must flatten out as it seals better. Still, seems like the o-ring could be bigger since you can’t see it in profile.

    Apex issue thread

I received the replacement power supply I bought directly from Neptune Systems and it solved the problem. I’m asking them if they can reimburse part or all the supply cost and if they changed the manufacturer or design yet so I know if I will need another new one in 2 years. When I took apart...

    Apex issue thread

Thanks @SupraSaltyReefer . My COR is 2 years old (the warranty is only 1 year) so I will use this info to buy a new supply. When the pump finally fails I’ll know to keep the $50 power supply for a fellow reefer… I hate buying the same supply again (fool me twice…) but BRS says the 1-link is...

    Conisering Apex and Trident.

No, I wish I had used all the time I spent troubleshooting Apex and Tridents to design my own version that didn’t suck. They can be useful if you travel a lot, provided you have a person who can be there to fix whatever problems arise. The Trident created as many disasters as it MIGHT have...
