Members Only Frag swap Sunday June 22nd

@jamie Yes we can do swaps and other events at someone’s house. Or community center. If you or anyone else would like to host or has a lead please let @MichaelB know. He was just saying that when we look to rent a place that we don’t have some inside relationship with, it is shockingly...

How Often Does Everyone Clean Their Avast Plank?

I agree in general, but when I first got my first Plank the flow was too high on the most open setting, and un-rehydrated mysis would get out and then float over the overflow, defeating the point of the tube. When I set to a lower setting it would rehydrate, then come out. But in the nearly 2...

    Trident reagent usage question.

When I sent mine in for the Trident replacement thing they gave me an intake filter with the new unit. I had the impression they were doing that standard. Maybe not.

What food does everyone put in their Avast Plank?

Yes but more specifically it’s most open when the largest hole is under the mixing pump intake. The less open settings are just throttling the pump intake. When the flow slows down for me I have to clean it (bottom part, inside of tube, and eventually the mixing pump). I haven’t had to clean the...

What food does everyone put in their Avast Plank?

It would be nice if the mixing pump intake was screened or something. Several times I’ve had a snail or floating debris get stuck in it and stop the mixing. For that reason I have the mixing pump turn off for an hour each night to let whatever is there crawl or float away.

What food does everyone put in their Avast Plank?

I like the pump outflow deflector in the new tube piece since it gets the water swirling more than the pump alone would. I wonder if the bottom twisty piece comes off (without breaking), that would give you the deflector without the hole size limiter.

What food does everyone put in their Avast Plank?

If you aren’t in a rush, they sometimes go on sale. I bought mine at 25% off on consecutive Black Friday’s, which is more than the savings above.

What food does everyone put in their Avast Plank?

They have changed the design some since launch. Currently it’s a plastic disc that covers the bottom of the mixing tube, just below the mixing pump. It swivels to let different amount of water flow through the mixing chamber. The more open, the more aggressive the mixing and more quick outflow...

How Often Does Everyone Clean Their Avast Plank?

I see and do the same as you. And like you, I keep telling myself I should clean the tube and mixing pump more often. I set the tube opening to the highest setting to extend times between feeding. When my plank was new it would cause the dried mysis to come out too quickly (not fully rehydrated)...

What food does everyone put in their Avast Plank?

I dump mine into the display. The creator of the Plank mentioned to me that ambient humidity can be a problem for food getting gummed up, this is the main reason I don’t put them in the sump area (100% humidity in a closed cabinet with water). Second reason is that I’m more likely to notice when...

What food does everyone put in their Avast Plank?

I have 2 planks. One feeds SF Bay brand freeze dried mysis (larger size) with a splash of Reef Jerky (smaller). The other feeds pellets, about 3/4 TDO medium, plus whatever else I have, which varies. 2 planks because the dried mysis feeds relatively slowly and the pellets faster. Like the...

    AWC reliability

Kind of a sidetrack, but auto Mg testing is more useful to detect changes in salinity than Alk testing. Alk can vary hour by hour and is affected by many things besides salinity. Whereas Mg is quite steady and is almost entirely dependent on salinity, short of some other catastrophe, which of...

    Neptune trident advanced replacement

I think Walnut Creek hot is similar to Las Vegas hot. Above 90F all summer, often 100F+, occasionally 110F. Not unusual for us to beat out Death Valley. Depends more on if your garage has southerly exposure and insulation. Mine never gets as hot as it is outside in the summer, but not unusual to...

    Neptune trident advanced replacement

That’s a useful reminder to the rest of us, since I store most of my reefing supplies in the garage and it can get hot

    9 footer disaster

I would not be able to work with what looks to be a small space between the top of the sump tank and the stand above it. You mentioned the fleece roller can only be added with the pulled sump out… which means it can only be removed or fixed or replaced or etc by draining the sump and removing...

    Marathon runners drinking NSW

Not sure if I was understanding your reference to isotonic fluids in hospitals, but seawater is definitely not used for that, it is synthetic and very simple compared to seawater. And by definition isotonic means not diluted, so it is used to expand the blood volume, for example in people whose...

    Oakland/Alameda Tank Tours May10th

Just my personal opinion, but I’d rather not have the tours video recorded and publicly posted. I think it ruins the spontaneous and personal offline nature of the in person event. If we decide to do that I’ll probably just not attend (or watch the video).

Sand sifting sea star (Astropecten polycanthus) - issues

They lose arm tips if you look at them funny. Not necessarily the case that your tank isn’t suitable. And especially not the case that another tank will be better.
