I would; gate valves are much easier to fine tune than ball valves. Ball valves are better to shut the flow completely, 1/4 turn and flow is off. A manifold will loose flow with the multiple connections, Tees, Elbows, reducers and what not. The Gate Valves allow you to compensate each outlet...

Instead of a ball valve, I’d suggest a gate valve.

Question is, How deep the substrate will be? If it mimics a deep sand bed and you later disturb it to transfer it to the new system, it will be really bad. You can have rock running and drop some fish food once in while to feed the bacteria. The substrate/sand, you can rinse it well, air dry it...

BTW, @jstiltne the base of the cabinet comes apart from the rest of the cabinet; it is secured with star drive screws, either T20 or T25 driver bit. I built it that way so it could pass through small door openings (<36" wide) The PVC liner tub can be removed with suction cups.

I've used in the past a clear container big enough for the new mate; drilled several holes on the container to allow flow and just let magic happen after a little time; sometimes a day or two but it has worked.
