Cool video of diy frag plugs

If someone wanted to give me the specs of the best frag-plug size, I can get a 3D model of the master-mold whipped up in just a few minutes. Flat discs would be outrageously easy to cast. Discs with a post are fairly easy, although marginally more complicated to slip-cast. Either way would...

Cool video of diy frag plugs

Yes - a single plaster mold can be used to cast many many replicas. A couple hundred wouldn't be unusual before the mold degraded and lost its precision. If I were doing this, I'd make a single plaster mold that had spots for many 10 or 20 frag plugs, that way you'd get a gazillion of these...

Cool video of diy frag plugs

I do have the desire to host a little get-together for some of the active folks in the San Jose area at my house sometime this summer for pizza/beer/hanging-out... I could also work a little lesson on frag-plug casting into that, if any of those folks happened to be interested. Funny enough...

First-time Innovative Marine 15 gal cube

I haven't posted a tank journal update in here in a while, but we're doing great despite a few ups, downs, and lessons along the way (ex: don't point the return pump right at hammers - even after just a single day, it can kill off heads). But all in all, we are loving it. And after the last...

Cool video of diy frag plugs

Michael: I have a couple kilns at the house (we have a pottery studio here in San Jose). I would be happy to fire any number of these that you cast. I also have probably 30 gallons of slip, and would be happy to give you enough slip to cast more plugs than you will ever have the...

    DBTC: Mystic Zoas

Unfortunately our frag went from thriving to a fast decline a couple months back. I tried treatment dipping, freshwater dip, carefully scraping everything off the frag-plug in case there was some kind of intruder... but, in the end it continued to dissolve until it was fully gone. The cause is...

If you happen to still have one of these, the mushrooms in our tank are doing amazing. I'll be at the swap in case one is available!

Zoa colony dying - funny white threads?

No - not that I could see. Some little floaties, but, I suspect that was just algae/detritus.

Zoa colony dying - funny white threads?

Okay, so we dipped the frag for 15 minutes in RODI, and used a toothpick to carefully scrape off all the feather dusters (just to be safe). I 3d-printed a little frag holder to move it up on the wall and away from any trouble-making hermit crabs (in the off chance the crabs are causing an...

Zoa colony dying - funny white threads?

I hope so! This was my favorite colony (probably 4 dozen heads, and just completely covering the plug). And now it's nearly gone. I'll cross my fingers the RODI dip does the trick. And, I'll probably use a toothpick to smash up some of those feather dusters just to be sure. It's just so...

Zoa colony dying - funny white threads?

Okay - so, good to know that the crazy-high-density of these feather dusters isn't the cause, but just a... coincidence. I love that idea of doing a freshwater dip. I'll take some RODI water, temp-match it, and drop these boogers in for 15 minutes. If it helps stop the colony decline, then...

Zoa colony dying - funny white threads?

Hey folks, Last fall brought a beautiful zoa colony into our (15 gal) tank that did well for months, and then took a sharp turn for the worse a few months back. I just moved this colony from it's spot in the tank to a little isolation tank (since I was worried that maybe a hermit crab was...

First-time Innovative Marine 15 gal cube

Oh that's a good reminder about the chalice - you can kinda see how we wedged it into the back-right corner where there isn't anything else. Maybe we'll lift it up higher (onto the arm pointing out to the right) so it's totally isolated. I was just worried about it shading things out once it...

First-time Innovative Marine 15 gal cube

Oh dang! Okay, we'll pop that off tomorrow and scoot it down to the bottom! We were going to do a little bit of rearranging of some of the hammers, so we'll do both at the same time!
