An easy way to do it is to drill the tank a little low for the bulkhead and use a 90 degree pvc angle on the inside of the tank. The top of the angle pvc will surface skim, you can put some type of plastic mesh in there to keep the creatures out. This doesnt look that great but its CHEAP!

Sure thatll work, the center brace does alot when the tank is full. Sumps are usually not full all the time, but as you know the pump turns off sometime and fills it up! I suppose as long as the seams are good, thats a great solution.
