I also strongly recommend UV Sterilizer! I had the same problem with my fresh water tank fo one year and whatever water change did not help. Aftet a week or two it would come back. But after using UV Sterilizer it never happened again!

They are just sponges. I thought maybe it is a good place for bacteria to grow.

That is true! Still I like the freedom that it give me for medication if something goes wrong like ich! Can I still use the Cupramine in the main tank if it is fish only or I have to treat the sick fish in separate tank?

Yeah still my dogface puffer from Petco looks fine. Maybe if I have noticed my raccoon cloudy eye in the store It would not ended up like this. Since now I will be more careful buying from any store.
