phishphood- Could just say I was looking for a cool handle that worked with the aquatic theme. But in reality I was registering for a forum when eating some Ben and Jerry's phishphood ice cream.

My guess is they'd be slower to grow upwards, since they would need to form a 'tip'. But not necessarily much slower in expanding/encrusting. I guess there could also be more potential for infection due to having two ends that are cut vs the usual one flat end.

Ooh, Anthony that might be a slightly larger issue. Mine comes down to around 17" closed with head attached. I suppose that as long as you have it in a tripod bag it shouldn't be too big an issue.

I've brought mine along with me multiple times, just tossed it in my backpack. This has been to/from texas, san diego, and international via costa rica with no problems whatsoever. I just made sure I had a camera in there with it so it wouldn't look suspicious.
