5 months isn’t a long time for a new tank, especially for a beginner. So I won’t get discouraged, but try to be more patient and wait out the uglies til tank really becomes stable. We all have tank issues, but learned to overcome them and move forward. I sound like a life coach, haha.

are you doing holes on side or bottom glass? On the side makes me nervous that weight of pipe with leverage on the bulkhead is enough to crack the glass.

Maybe just drill 2 holes, one for main and second for emergency. Have return go over the rim. No need for external box. Those tanks have really thin glass that cracks easily, so don’t put any pressure when drilling.
