How much to feed fish? Do we tend to overfeed our pets? Easy to feed a lot, difficult to feed the right amount

Which fish is eating its weight :)? Aminos/coral food is not fish food.

How much to feed fish? Do we tend to overfeed our pets? Easy to feed a lot, difficult to feed the right amount

While not the main point here, I just want to address the concern that I do not feed my fish properly. This is their current diet: - 3 x daily 40 secs high quality pellet food each 2 hours apart with AVAST auto feeder - 1 x daily frozen food LRS various types - 2 nori sheets daily - several...

How much to feed fish? Do we tend to overfeed our pets? Easy to feed a lot, difficult to feed the right amount

I have mentioned these points in the post, maybe you want to re-read it. There is a difference in how active the fish is and how much to feed them. I am not seeing where this is a loaded question? Edit: I did get inspired though by the loaded question comment, and added a loaded question to the...

How much to feed fish? Do we tend to overfeed our pets? Easy to feed a lot, difficult to feed the right amount

I agree with some of the details, ie feed your fish, algae should not be the reason etc, but disagree with your overall sentiment, Erin, as it oversimplifies the point.

    Oceanic 40gallon Sps tank.

I will leave the next steps to you Michael. I could probably give you a better source if I spend more time on researching but see below the Gemini Thinking response. Good luck, just trying to help out, and nothing wrong with fact checking if it gets you better outcome.

GAC will not help you with your tin levels. GFO will. Or, as I said, trying it with water changes first to not lower your phosphate levels more. Also, if you need to use GAC for other things, you can mix it with GFO.

How much to feed fish? Do we tend to overfeed our pets? Easy to feed a lot, difficult to feed the right amount

Looks like there are some rules as to how much to feed fish daily, some of it seems to come from aquaculturing fish for human consumption. My nitrates are consistently higher than I wanted them and I am sure I am feeding too much, even after cutting back quite a bit. I do not believe that fish...

    Oceanic 40gallon Sps tank.

Better to stop the source first. And your phosphate is rather low anyway so I would try to not use a GFO reactor until PO4 climbs up a bit. And rather focus on LOWERING (all caps intentional haha) nitrates. Lowering nitrates is easy and hard. Feed less (still enough!), larger water changes...

    Oceanic 40gallon Sps tank.

I guessed that you had you had done a water change from your elevated iron and manganese values. This could also potentially explain your Strontium. Yes, then is is most likely the cause. I initially thought 20 ug/L was not too bad but for SPS, above 10 ug/L is not recommended at all so this...

    Oceanic 40gallon Sps tank.

TM ICPs are performed by the Fauna Marin ICP lab. If you drop it off at the post office on Friday morning, you will get the results in 10 days (exactly), in some rare cases in 7 days. The TM ICPs are structured very similarly as the Fauna Marin ICPs so, the most important values are in the...

    A Macro Cube

Tough start with dry rock only. You should add a piece of live rock. I do think too low phosphates are a bigger issue than the nitrates. Throw a small dead clam in there (grocery store) and see if it helps raising your phosphates. If not, keep adding more clams until you get tp 0.1 mg/L PO4.

Polo Reef by Andrew Sandler's nightmare

He was told a year ago by Alex from Abyzz (CEO) who visited him that his setup would cause issues eventually, specifically as it relates to some of the valves (which appears to be an unusual choice for a public aquarium type of setup and volume). He was not impressed by this feedback at the...

    Dan's RSR-S 850 Mixed Reef

Now only need to turn off that ancient Kalkwasser and add a couple of gyres (plus two replacements). Dosing three different things for alk and CA seems very complicated. A good 2 part should be all you need, even with a strong consumption.

L/F leads on a possible frag swap location?

No bridge toll - definitely preferred over the otherwise great Brisbane location :).

Diving straight in - Sameer's Waterbox Infinia 230.6 build thread

I only had one and he did not get too much in the sand bed. He came, up, then he lost half a leg and I gave him away as feeding them creates a lot of other issue and while they are interesting, they are meant to be clean up crew.

Could use some expert guidance on hammers

This sounds like a good plan and should also make the other corals happy as most would not like higher alk and lower nutrients and too much flow. However, your goni might not like PAR above 200 PAR. These are always tricky to keep in a mixed reef, as their lower light expectations can sometimes...

Could use some expert guidance on hammers

Oh and be careful with gfo. It can strip out trace elements from the water. How much are you using and do you use it in a media reactor or just in a bag?

Could use some expert guidance on hammers

Lowering nitrate is a bit of a pain so do not raise it too much. Around 5 should be enough. I am not a fan of neonitro, hence my suggestion to use ammonia. You could also buy Fauna Marin Coral Wow, which is pretty much ammonia with some other stuff. Salt is good so traces should be fine for now...

Could use some expert guidance on hammers

I am not sure if flow is the issue but you could turn down your return pump a bit and play around with the direction of the Tunzes, creating more indirect flow. My Hammers and Torches get around 280 PAR, and rather strong but indirect flow from the gyres. I am sure they would feel even better...
