Where to buy MaxSpect rotor shafts?

[edit/update]- So after learning more about the current state of MaxSpect support, I wanted to update here since I went prematurely ranty above in my second post. MaxSpect support is handled by Aperture through their distribution deal. Functionally this means BRS support, which remains high...

Where to buy MaxSpect rotor shafts?

Thanks for the lead Casey. I contacted BRS customer support (they are still awesome by the way) and they were able to find the replacement part for me. They sell it, but only if you go through customer service (not on the public facing site). It’s $58 for the rotor shaft (x2 for me). Kinda...

Live Aquaria is going out of business ?

So basically they were doing the corporate equivalent of payday loans and *allegedly* were cooking the books to promise the same future paycheck multiple times. I don’t see this ending well.

Where to buy MaxSpect rotor shafts?

And as a ranty aside, when I paid the premium price for these, I thought I was getting a premium product from a premium company. Having them just be yet another Chinese company (HQ in HK, made on mainland) selling mediocre hardware with limited or no support is making me feel had. At least when...

Where to buy MaxSpect rotor shafts?

I have 2 of the previous generation (from 2023) MaxSpect Gyre XF-350 pumps. For both of them, they have intermittently been locking up recently. I did a deep clean and noticed both of the rotor shafts (the magnetic spinny thing in the middle of the motor) are breaking. One is fully broken open...

    Alternative Trident Calibration Solution

Agree. The best approach isn’t calibration solution, but to test your water manually and then calibrate to that. Several advantages.

Live Aquaria is going out of business ?

A lot of companies use bankruptcy as a legal maneuver to allow reorganization and debt restructuring without being constrained by normal rules. As opposed to because they are going away.

Coral ID - Which coral is this? Update: Montipora spongodes [for now…]

It definitely looks like what we in the club have always called Montipora Spongodes. Whether or not the monti part has been reclassified I couldn’t say, but I’m confident that’s what it is. https://www.bareefers.org/forum/threads/dbtc-montipora-spongodes.31448/

How does fish feeding translate into nutrients? N and P specifically!

I like the more compact size, but not having the mixing tube gives up on much of the advantage of having a Plank in my opinion

Challenges in removing chloramine in RODI setup

My understanding is, if we focus on chloramine, it will process 3.500 gallons of water at a rate of 0.5 gpm flow, and yields at least 85% reduction in chloramine when the level is 3 ppm Note that if you have 2 of these blocks in a row, it’s more like at least 98% reduction.

Challenges in removing chloramine in RODI setup

No just the 2 of the regular size ones rated for chloramine: https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/brs-universal-carbon-block-filter-1-micron.html?queryID=25c0b1cd294843433dd8abc933139acd&objectID=4027&indexName=brs_prod_m2_default_products

Challenges in removing chloramine in RODI setup

Sorry if this was already mentioned but what about just using 2 of the BRS universal chloramine-rated carbon filters before your RO membrane(s)? I’ve been doing that for many years with very long longevity of my membranes. Multiple times longer than the average reefer stays in the hobby. We are...

How does fish feeding translate into nutrients? N and P specifically!

Our frag swap is free to supporting members. And the coral there is swapped for free. Unless you meant time-doing-something-not-with-your-significant-other budget or something. Then I get it.

    Thinking of quitting reefing

It’s a legit question. No one best answer. The most straightforward way is to give everything away or sell it to someone trustworthy. Parting everything out is painful. You can give stuff away here without being a member, but to sell stuff you need to be a supporting member ($30). You won’t get...

A broader discussion about skimmers / Tunze DOC 9430 - best skimmer money can buy? / Impact on phosphates?

NO3 and PO4 are not organics, since organics have carbon in them as well. But in our systems they come from broken down organics, so certainly are related. Also N isn’t the same as NO3 and P isn’t the same as PO4 since they can be in different forms. Note that ICP testing looks at the elements...

A broader discussion about skimmers / Tunze DOC 9430 - best skimmer money can buy? / Impact on phosphates?

I’m not sure I have direct answers to your followup questions. One additional consideration that might help is that a skimmer’s rate of pulling out amphipathic organics depends not only on the skimmer itself and its settings, but also the concentration of the organics in the water. So if you...
