    Padina Algae

There aren't many things that like to eat Padina. I saw a lot in Tahiti, not even the big Unicorn tangs would touch it. I had some in my first reef tank, but I found it died off on its own. Manual removal, or patience, is probably the best way to get rid of it.

    Who's on your cleanup crew??

In my 40, I have 4 fire shrimp, 2 Trochus, several red legged hermits, 3 electric blue hermits (which seem to dine mostly on coralline algae) and hundreds of Asterina starfish. Well maybe not starfish, more like a hundred Asterina legs. Mostly amphipods in the refugium. I don't know if they...

Would you consider having your tank featured as a TOTM?

I would just like to see everyone's tank. Beautifully manicured tanks are cool, but I think it would be more fun to find out someone's a closet Valonia freak. ;D If the TOTM cyled through the whole club over and over, we'd get to see things grow over time. Just my noobie $0.02.

    The great Algae debate

When this tank was set up, did you go through a hair algae period as the tank was going through it inital phases? I set up one tank where this didn't happen until later after the tank was over a year old, then it decided to go through its hair algae phase. Caught me completely off guard and I...

Oh cool! Sounds like my kinda live rock! Free critters!!! Maybe I can talk my wife into letting me set up that Ricordia only tank she's always wanted. ;)

Problems with Brute Trash cans anyone???

Well, I guess my next step is to wait till my BTA recovers, and then go back to using the Brute can and see what happens. I hope my Perculas will forgive me for messing w/ their house.

Problems with Brute Trash cans anyone???

Tuberider - Were you storing the water in the trashcan or just making batches for a water change? Amen on the strange, but it's tentacles started dropping off on Friday so I was rather worried. On the plus side, the stress made it split so my percula pair now has a double-wide. ;D

Problems with Brute Trash cans anyone???

Anyone ever experience any problems with water contamination w/ the food grade Brute trash cans? I was using one for my topoff reservoir since last September. After a coupe of months I started having some algae problems, then my BTA started going down hill. I worked on eliminating one thing...

    Chalice care

All my chalice colonies like low light levels & low flow. Hated MH 10K light even when sheltered, love the new T-5's. Better color w/ more blue light, and are intolerant of any softies in the tank. I have two that were barely hanging on till I scraped out that last little bit of Sarcophyton...

Did I break a rule or something?

I noticed the thread I started asking about frag plugs is gone. Did I violate a forum policy? My apologies if I did. :-[

how to get rid of red planaria flatworms

I found water changes removed what they were living off of and they disappeared. I had a lot of them in my old skimmerless 75 gallon reef. I was actually kinda sad when they were gone since they didn't do any harm. I rather like finding new worms in my tank, and got all excited last night...

    T5HO bulb selection question

I tried the UVL 50/50 actinic whites, but they didn't add much more fluorescence compared to the blueplus bulbs. They also added a pinky purple which looked funky to me, but some people might like. The bulb color mix I like to far is: aquablue blue plus Geissemann daylight blueplus aquablue...

Continuing Tank Problems. Reallly need help. (again)

After reading the thread on here about RC being low in Mg, I tested my tank water and found out the concentration of Mg was about 850ppm.

Oh I forgot to ask, when is the next meeting? I got a little confused reading the events forum. ??? Or maybe I've had way too much coffee to concentrate properly.

    New Member Area/Introduce yourself thread

Hello, I just joined BAR last weekend. Hopefully I can make it to some of the meetings. I was a member of Seabay for several years but only managed to make it to 4 meetings. ::) I've kept fish since I was 8, and have had at least one reeftank going since 2001. My current set up is a 40...

Continuing Tank Problems. Reallly need help. (again)

I agree. I was doing a 10% to 20% water change each week to be on the safe side. Now I'm waiting on my MgCl from bulkreefsupply.com before I make any more wc's w/ my RC salt mix. Sure wish I hadn't bought up 3 buckets when it was on sale. ::) stubbsz: Have you thought about adding some more...

Continuing Tank Problems. Reallly need help. (again)

I was having some similiar issues, though my tank hadn't gone as far downhill. Two things have made a huge difference: 1) I change my charcoal 1x to 2x per week, and use 1/2 cup in a small filter I place in the sump, I think it's a Fluval. 2) I started dosing w/ Salifert's Trace Elements...
