We've added an adult (6-7") Maxima in our new tank a few weeks ago. Seems like he's been doing well, but the added demand for alk/calc were a good motivator to get our dosing pumps up and running.
I bought two 8 packs of 4"x8" felt filter socks made by "Encompass All" via Amazon and they completely disintegrated into felt tufts the first time I washed them. I washed them with warm water and a cup of bleach (as I've always done with felt socks). Thankfully, I had 2 quality filter socks...
Our new 40BR display/30gal sump is fully operational and just finished cycling last week. There's nothing but macroalgae and copepods living in the tank as of today, but we're starting to plan our fish stocking list and I'll probably buy our first coral this weekend. I'd love feedback and...
I recently bought a pair of used Kessil A350Ws without mounting hardware, so I ordered goosenecks to mount them. Unfortunately, when the goosenecks arrived a week or two later I realized the mounting screws that hold the Kessils to the goosenecks were missing from the lights and I couldn't...
I'm just beginning to build a new tank, on a cheaper budget and with somewhat smaller ambitions than our 90 gal tank on the peninsula. I've got a nice 40 breeder display and I'm installing my own low-profile overflow. I selected the Eshopps Eclipse (Medium) overflow - which has a low profile...
Our first tank was all new equipment and I wanted to get it up and running quickly, but this time around I'm taking my time with a smaller scale, cheaper tank. I found a re-built 40 bowfront stand which I'm re-purposing for my new 40 breeder build. The stand doesn't have proper access to allow...
I've purchased a nice 40 breeder tank and I'm planning to drill it for a low profile overflow in a Herbie drain setup (2x 1" drains, 1x 1" return).
Has anyone had experience with the original Ghost overflows, the synergy reef overflows, or the new Eshopps Eclipse overflows? They all seem to...
We've gotten settled back on the east coast and I picked up a nice 40 breeder display tank. I'm planning to drill it and install a synergy reef overflow.
However, I haven't found many nice cabinet/stands around the area. For our last tank, I got lucky with a beautiful cherry finished DSA...
I've got two refugium packs for free, what's left of my refugium after my tank breakdown today:
- Big hunks of chaetomorpha macroalgae
- Misc other macroalgae
- live rock rubble
- copods, amphipods
- small white brittle stars
- etc
Our refugium was teeming with life and fed a pair of mandarins...
Sadly, we're breaking down our 90gal tank for a move in April and I need to find homes for our fish. These are all free to folks with an established tank and an appropriate environment for the fish.
Flame Angel Fish
Bengai Cardinal
Yellow Tang
Pair of Tank-raised Ocellaris Clowns
Mated pair...
Sadly, we're moving in April and I'm breaking down our 90gal mixed reef.
Much of the coral has already gone to new homes, but here's what's left:
Basketball sized green birdsnext colony
Softball sized maroon/green body acropora colony
Softball size green montipora confusa colony
baseball...
It sounds like the Acan Lords we all know and love have been recently re-classified as Micromussa and not Acanthastrea.
February 5 2016, Jake Adams –
Micromussa lordhowensis is the new designation for one of the reef aquarium hobby’s most popular species of large polyp stony corals. After a...
I've got several large frags and colonies of Hollywood Stunner Chalice for pickup in Mountain View on DBTC. You should have an established tank with a tank journal on BAR forums, the usual DBTC rules. You can see a few of the parent colonies in this top down shot on the bottom middle and left...
I've been in the hobby for 3 years now and I've been snorkeling in the past, but I recently came back from a vacation where I went snorkeling on a lively reef in Kauai for the first time since getting involved in the hobby. It was a mind blowing experience for me to see so many of the fish and...
My trusty refractometer has rusted out and the sample cover doesn't move any more. I'm planning to buy a new one but can't find our refractometer fluid.
Does anybody have some I can use to calibrate a new refractometer?
I'm going to be culling about half our chaeto from the refugium this weekend, so about a cubic foot or so available if anyone wants some. Great macroalgae populated with brittle stars, copepods, ampipods, and stomatella snails. Great for a refugium.
We have a large 300w heater in our 90 gallon tank, which has enough power to raise the temperature quickly but draws a lot of current (~ 2 amps). It doesn't turn on very frequently, but when it does it runs briefly and turns off.
Is it more efficient to have a big heater running less often...
I've been running Vortech pumps on all of my tanks for the last few years, but I'm upgrading to two MP40s from two MP10s on our 90 gallon and adding an Apex WXM controller for them.
Do many folks run controllers on their Vortechs? What schedule/program are you using?
I've been running mine at...
One of my Kessil lamps is having problems with the cooling system. It's physically hotter to the touch on the casing than my other two A350s. It's been periodically shutting itself off today, I believe due to heat buildup.
Does anyone have experience repairing the cooling system? Does Kessil...
