Our mission

Adding dead rock

Ok, I should be able to install my HOB overflow and get my sump on-line. I'm planning on using some rock for a bubble tower (to help with micro bubbles) which requires rock. I was thinking of throwing some extra rock in the sump if I have room also. Which brings me to my question, could I do any damage by adding say 10 lbs of dead rock to my sump? I don't want to cause any serious swings but I can see adding poor quality live rock as being an issue but dead rock, don't know.

Here's how it would look

46g bow front
60lbs of live rock currently in my display
15g sump (about 10g volume)
10lbs dead rock

If the rock is completely sterile (as can be) and you have enough other stuff already in your tank it shouldn't be an issue. If it's got stuff that's dying all over it you definitely will get an ammonia spike unless you have hundreds of pounds of rock and stuff already.

Thanks, I think I'll play it safe and just use a minimal really dead rock to get the bubble tower up and running then and then go with LR if I have room for more in my sump.
