Amazing thing in my tank ... floating sand layer...

I wish I had pics, but I came home and saw what appeared to be a spider web covered with debris and sand in my new tank. Upon closer inspection, it's even more awesome than that ... the entire tank, at about 3 inches above the bottom of the tank has a floating layer of sand and debris, as if there was invisible sand under it!

So what is it? Well the day before, I decided that it's time to add salt to the RO water into Wifebane. Since the tank is 180g, I just took a bag of salt and dumped it in. I didn't mix it because my mother-in-law was in the room and she was farting up a storm so I had to hold my breath, dump the salt and retreat.

Since it wasn't mixed, it just dissolved and I believe the salty water just levelled itself out at the bottom of the tank. The mixed up debris from the 10 seconds I turned on the return pump was enough to kick up some debris...which then settled on this interface between salty and fresh water.

That's my theory anyway....it looks so cool, I wish I could take a picture of it, but it doesn't photograph well.

I guess it's like those executive toys with oil and water in it, but you can't see the interface except for the floating sand layer (there is only a smattering of sand in the tank)..

So weird and cool!

I had to share this before I dump more salt in tonight and actually mix it.

Maybe if I take a video and move the camera around it will capture the phenomenon.

The farts were horrible. I could barely stop myself from laughing. But I'm being mean, my MIL had surgery so she is staying with us while she heals...

If they ARE a part of the phenomenon, I'm sure it'll happen again then.
