Arm and Hammer Q?

Hi !

I was asked if Baking Soda (Arm and Hammer) can be used to raise PH in SW aquariums, is it safe?
It's on a site in spanish.

A&H is used by many many people here as an alk additive.

ah didn't know that.. I only use lime.. the pickle stuff

They asked me about it only to increase PH since they have no issues with Kalk/Calcium
They use it to control the PH of their swimming pool and said some people use it to increase it in saltwater aquariums; I'm just clueless about this issue and told them I'd ask around here.

Baking Soda (NaHCO3) will actually decrease the pH, if you use enough you can push it down to 7.8.

Baked baking soda, a.k.a. washing soda (Na2CO3) will raise pH a significant amount.

Any health concerns on "baking" baking soda or just bake it like cookies?

bake it like cookies

Spread it thin on a cookie sheet and bake away. I'm sure there are recommended temps/times to be found online.

I go for around 1/2 hour at 350, that seems to work. Also, IME parchment paper really helps too, just spread it out on the parchment and lift the paper off when it has cooled down.
