My poor car:

The only thing visible was the mount for my navigation system, which was hidden away (and stolen of course).

The thief basically broke the window, reached in and looked for the navi system. Finally finding it, he left everything else except my $2 bill. Navi cost over $700 =(

Should have locked it in the glove compartment like I always did, except recently. Don't be too careless, even over time.

All that was in view as the dumb little suction cup. oh well, no more coral for awhile. THis destroyed my leather seats, door panels, and put a huge dent in my wallet so far. Sucks!

Yikes, even if you're covered the deductable is going to kill you if it covers stuff stolen, and the window most likely won't even be close to enough to report.

Happened with me when I was at SFSU a long time ago... they broke one of those rear quarter mini windows, stole all the change from my ashtray.. how they knew it was there? Maybe it was opened a bit? Either way I was lucky because my wallet was right in the center divide in clear site, and it was there.

I parked right in front of city hall! GUH!

Yeah the deductible is $500. It covers my navi, and all the damage. Damage = window gone, leather seats slashed up by the glass laying on it (the big slabs), the entire door panel totally scratched up and gashed, and a bit of glass on the exterior window "sill" scratched it pretty badly.

I'm getting the final check from State Farm tomorrow =P Car's in the shop today getting the window replaced. I'll probably have to get reimbursed.

Sorry, Art. Maybe I should have posted a warning I heard last week on KGO, "hide your navi mounts". Apparently these type of break-ins are rampant. Hopefully State Farm will take care of you. They've got a good reputation.

Thats the worst part of town and ironically the Fed building is right there too!

Well I wouldn't call it the worst part, but it's pretty bad.

Yes State Farm is definitely doing the right thing, they helped me out big time last year. So hopefully the insurance estimate tomorrow to fix the rest of the car goes well =X

My wife's an FBI agent in the fed building right there and they all say it's the worst! ;)

Still sucks though that someone has to mess with your car and steal stuff.

Next year your mounts will be useless as mounting to the window will be illegal in CA.

OMG! Where will I mount my rear view mirror? ;D

Your in more trouble then that if you have to suction cup your mirror to your window! Just want kind of tinker toy you driving anyways :D

I would think that mounting to your window is illegal anyways. Thought the law specifically stated x by y inches in the lower right corner only or something.

DANG - sorry to hear that this happend to you Art. I'm not sure if this has been asked but, will the insurance cover your navi loss?
[/quote]

Wow I haven't seen this thread in awhile... but yes insurance covered my navi as well, thank goodness!

I believe there's a law that states you can't put anything on your front windshield that obstructs view, which leaves that little space you're referring to probably. There are so many different laws that overlap each other, and sometimes contradict.

Cops use the "obstructed view" thing to pull over a majority of cars for no reason! So if you have a smelly tree thing hanging from your mirror, they can even use that!

Yup, it's indeed illegal to mount anything on your windshield except for the lower right hand corner farthest away from the driver. You can read more about it here....

http://www.gpspro.biz/vehiclecodes

Not so sure about that, but those damn disco ball crystal things in other people's cars are ridiculous.

As far as not mounting anything on the windshield then the Fastrak sponders' would be just as illegal, no.

Fwiw, I was up towards the Redding area driving back and getting lunch near Colusa and noticed that the driver next to me in a Grand Am had all of the windows down half way at the McD. Granted we were more or less parked in front of the McD, but the navi unit was in plain view. There were no other passengers in the car. It was about 100 degrees outside, so hence the wanting to "crack" the windows if you well.

Me thinks if it was in the Bay Area the navi unit and accoutrements would have been gone in a flash. It was maybe a quarter of mile to the freeway back to I-5.

The car belonged to an older man in his late fifties. I almost said something to him, but decided not to as he was pulling out of the spot.

Fastrak sponders' are an exception to the rule as stated in the link above since it falls into the category of "devices for the purpose of communicating with the CHP or capable of electronic toll and traffic management".
