So I started this tank because I've always wanted a tank with a sump and got tired of having nano tanks for the past few years. I figured a 40 breeder with a sump would be a perfect build, mainly because thats all i could fit in the space i had and its also not too big to cost thousands. I started off buy purchasing a marineland tank, the Eshopps eclipse M overflow, and hardware to build a cheap stand

Once the first steps were done i painted the stand black and ordered all the necessary plumbing pieces to get this bad boy running. My original plan was to use a 20 long diy sump but then i found a crazy steal on a trigger sapphire 26 so i ended up using that. I ordered a jebao mdp 3500 return pump and all the pvc from brs.

This is where some issues started... I had a few leaks pop up and everytime i fixed it, another one popped up. but with time, some swearing, replacing some fittings, and silicone everything worked out in the end. this is how it sits for now until i get rocks situated. everything got transfered from my previous 15 gallon.

Welcome to the club! 40 breeder with a 2x4 stand is the old school 90s budget build that you can't go wrong with.

What's your lighting on top?
currently using a kessil a160 that was on my last tank. saving up some money for 2 hydras or whatever else that can light the tank good enough

Sweet build! If you're looking for budget lighting, the NooPsyche K7 mini's are pretty amazing for the price. They run about $80 per fixture. I just added one to my budget build and I've been really happy with it. The only downside is the app sucks, but that's true of most reefing apps (even the higher end stuff).

A nicrew hyperreef 150 or 200 could also work would even be able to grow anything including acros.

They would still be considered budget for the most part. 1 should be sufficent for a 40 gallon if mounted at proper height. You have many options on a smaller tank. So maybe check out utube reviews on various lights
