Gerry’s Waterbox 180.5

Well,
Time for an update on my tank. I went through a bad cyano outbreak over the last 4 months. Lost quite a few acros and some lps. Took a while to get it under control. I think it was due to high phosphates. They measured at 0.9. Spent time doing larger water changes which helped. I think in the end I was over feeding too much. I bought a cheap drum auto feeder for the pellet food. This helped take “the power” of feeding out of my hands. I realize that I just love having too many fish. So ended up adding a GFO reactor. Phosphates are now around 0.15. Cyano is gone. Had some turf algae but I think my algae blenny finally got caught up on this because not it is gone. Still seeing some sps not looking happy. Brought home a frag and it RTSed in two days. So no more Acros till everything settles down.

Still interested in lanthum dosing. Just need to have some time to set it up and monitor it closely.

I assume the GFO pulled out most of the traces the acros need to be happy. What have you been supplementing since using GFO?

I have not done any supplementation. GFO was just started two weeks ago. The acros were in trouble over the last couple of months. I need to run and ICP test and see what to supplement.

Quick tank update.
I don't want to jinx it but the tank has been doing well. I had a serious cyano issue last summer that has finally resolved about 4 months ago. I have been pretty happy overall with how the tank is doing and overall coral growth. I still struggle a bit with some acro's. I do not have very good eye for coral placement and overall esthetics, but right now I am pretty happy with how my tank looks. The fish are all doing well. I have some corals that never really recovered and have gradually died off. I try to remove their skeletons when I see algae growing on them. I recently had to remove most of a plating purple monti that was trying to grow over a few other corals. I also have an encrusting monti that is growing way too much so I placed a frogspawn and hammer on top of it (you can see this in the middle of the second pic) since then they appear to be killing it off. Trying to use natural methods of control. I noticed that where the LPS polyps (goni, hammer, and frogspawn) make contact the monti died off. This is easier that chipping away at it or using something like F Aptasia to kill them off temporarily.

I have a bali green slimer that continues to plate but refuses to develop any tall branches. It initially sprouted upwards with a thick stump, and then since then it just continues to puddle and plate out.
The torches, trachy's, and birds nest seem really happy.
Still can't seem to get zoa's to really grow in my tank, but not as big of a fan as my wife so not really concerned.

My forest fire digi grows like a weed. I will need to eventually start fragging the bali slimer since it is trying to shadow my goni, it is butting up against a birds nest, and there is an acro behind it that is being slowly covered up.

Right now my favorite corals are the gonis and the two trachy's along the right side of the tank. They have great soft tissue extension and the coloration is pretty intense.

I finally got my used Trident installed and working. I keep double checking the results with my Red Sea tests, but pretty consistent over the last week. I had purchased the Trident used about 2 years ago, but since I am the master procrastinator it sat in a box in the garage all this time. I finally got it out. Hooked it up, and got several error messages. Took it apart. flushed all the tubes, readjusted some of the tubing, and cleaned the cuvette. Now it seems happy for the time being.

Just wanted say thank you for the frags one more time. Also the tank was stunning in person, amazing setup, fish and coral. Also I think I’m going to copy your idea of the frogspawn over the monti. Except I have a GSP rock that I like/ want to do more with.
