metals that are safe to put in a bbq?

So anybody have a good idea of what kind of metals I can put on a grill. Thinking of trying to make a smokebox type thingamajigger. I figured if it comes in pipe form and I can toss some caps on it that'd be good. So are any of the typical pipes found in home improvement stores safe to burn or am I looking at figuring out how to bend/form something out of a type of sheet metal?

Galvanized is questionable.
First, it reacts with gas, hence not being allowed for gas lines. So depends on how it is used.
Second, at high temps, it releases nasty fumes.
Welding is an issue, but not really sure a BBQ will be problem since it is much lower temp.

Copper and aluminum will oxidize away at BBQ temps.

Simple steel black pipe should be fine. Of course, it will rust out eventually.

Best is stainless. $$$
