Newb in SJ - 120 G

HOwdy!

I'm a couple posts in, but thought I'd introduce myself. I'm not new to forums, but very new to aquariums and reefing. My buddy, VietNR1, has been helping me and showing me the way. Also, I've been to several stores around the bay area. I'm starting to appreciate all the many kinds of creatures in these tanks.

I got really excited, and wanted an 8 foot in-wall tank at my office, and then saw the cost... ouch! (there was a full 8 ft. peninsula on CL selling for $2k just recently too though!), but I wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting into.

So my friend already had a 120 g glass aquarium from an older CL buy. This will be a great start, and see how long I will be swimming. Currently in the process of finishing the tank and canopy, but here is my setup:

120 G Glass (4' x 2' x 2')
Dual Corner Overflows
2 x 250W MH - Lumenb Bright Mini Reflectors - Reeflux 10K (will be adding T5 or DIY Led for actinics, I'm building some bike lights already)
2 x Coral Seas 102B Powerheads
Euro-Reef CS6-2 Skimmer with Sedra 5000 Pump
Chiller (forgot model number)

looking for 40 gallon sump (possibly 40g glass on CL and convert) (Anyone have any advice or one for grabs? Was recommended krittertanks, but trying to keep costs low)

I will be a BAR member in 30 days! lol

Also, I want to be a premium member from one of the other forums, like reefcentral, is that the one to do? or recommend another one?

Anyways, hi!

There is no reason to pay the premium price for RC any longer since they opened the search feature to everyone at all times.

I visit:
nano-reef.com
3reef.com
reef2reef.com
reefs.org
reefcentral.com

and a few others

Oh, and WELCOME

PS. I think your skimmer is way undersized for that tank.

Quick question, I am going to be building my sump soon, and wanted to use the Euro-Reef for now and upgrade to a bigger skimmer later. What dimensions should I make the skimmer compartment to be future proof for the future skimmer? 120 g + 40-55 g tank sump (most likely 55 g tank)

What skimmer do you recommend while we are at it?

Thanks Gresham for the info.

Most of the below skimmers ratings are pretty spot on. I have a Warner Marine K2 for my 120 that is being setup @ the moment. I've played with the other WM skimmers and really like them, not to mention Jon Warner is in cali so you're keeping the $$$ in our economy :)

All of them on the below list are great skimmers though.

I have a small Bubble Magus NAC6 on my kitchen aquarium and I have to say I am very impressed with BM for the price.

Heard good things about the Vertex too...

The Euroreef would be able to hold you over for awhile, but agree that it would prob be a little undersized once your tank is fully stocked.

Which Coralvue or Bubble Magus would you recommend? They seem to be much more affordable. My would like to spend about $250-400 for a new skimmer. I will try to sell my Euro-Reef CS6 for hopefully $200-250, since I it has a brand new Sedra 5000 pump (is that a reasonable price?)

I will be using the 55 gallon sump, and I haven't built the sections yet, so any size would do.

Would buying the larger one be overkill? I have come down to these options, any suggestions you have would be awesome, what would be your TOP 3:

- MSX200
- Octopus Extreme Skimmer Series 200
- Octopus Extreme Skimmer Series 250
- Super Reef Octopus 2000
- Super Reef Octopus Protein Skimmer XP-2000
- Bubble Magus NAC66
- Bubble Magus NAC7
- Bubble Magus BM150
- Bubble Magus BM160
- Vertex IN-180
- Vertex IN-250
- Vertex IN-280

Welcome aboard, J L
Good luck with the tanks project. Sounds like you are off to a real good start with tank building and gathering information. Keep us posted and start a tank thread that you can update to keep us informed about how things are working out. It will be fun to watch it "grow"

Regarding "other" forums, I think you will find that an active local forum (such as BAR) is your best bet for connecting to resources and solutions for your efforts. I've whored around a little with other forums and seldom visit them any longer. There's just too much going on with innovation and support right here in our own back yard for me to spread it out much thinner.

Again, glad to have you aboard!
