Pitho Crabs

are they really peaceful?

My wife picked up a pair of watchmen gobbies yesterday for our 30 gallon. She loves watching the tanks and will watch them for hours. She acclimated the gobies, and put them in the 30. Do note the stock of our 30 has changed, two clowns, one 6 line wrasse, one long nose hawk fish, one lawn mower blenny, one ruby red dragonette, 4 pitho crabs, two trochus, a Japanese shrimp, and two Nassarius snails.

She watched the tank all day, and all seemed good. She came home from work (11pm) and all seemed good. Got up this morning and our 30 gallon had turned into a battle ground. The watchman was chasing one of the gobies around the tank, when the gobie went to hide a pitho grabbed it by the tail and tried to pull it into it's cave. My wife intervened and saved it. But one goby is MIA, my wife is watching the tank and if she can spot it she will remove it as well. She placed the rescued watchman goby in the 90... Which already has a watchman goby so that might be trouble as well :(

but my question is I thought Pitho crabs are peacful? They never bother the dragonette, or the blenny. We were thinking of putting some in our 90, but if they are going to bother our gobies.... then maybe not?

thoughts.

correct, one watchman goby survivor was removed... and we are not sure if the other is crab food, or just hiding.

I have never had any issues with pitho crabs attacking fish or anything else. I wish I could find them more easily since they are great at eating algae. I am not sure why by pithos seem more sensitive and don’t survive as long in my tank vs. emerald or hermit crabs who are very resilient.

Did the LFS say they were mated pair of gobies? Otherwise they normally fight especially in a small tank until one flips its gender goes through counseling then shacks up with a pistol shrimp! Some dominate and pair up while others just fight a lot which may lead to a dead end..I did have two that never paired up and lived at opposite ends of tank five six feet apart for a while! If crabs don’t have enough algae they definitely be carnivorous! The only crabs I trust are Acro (Trapezia Pocillopora).. Pom Pom ( lybia ), Porcelain Anemone Crab (Neopetrolisthes ohshimai). I’ve caught more then one emerald green having the munchies for corals!
