Water testing setup

Been 10 years since I've been in the hobby and was curious what people use and recommend now for testing. I was gonna pickup a set of Hanna checkers but wanted to see if anything better has appeared on the market.

Welcome back!
What are you checking?

For alk/ca/mg I use the Neptune trident
If not auto testing -then hanna works for alk, as well as sailfert. For CA I find Hanna too complicate and use sailfert.

For P and N I use Hanna

Salifert for alk, cal, mag, no3 and Hanna for ulr po4. I do have a Hanna alk as backup for the salifert but haven’t used it once I locked in the color change b

Most people here do not test their water, I do - this is all you need to know:

Alk - Hanna
Nitrate - Hanna High Range
Phosphate - Hanna ULR
CA / MG - Salifert
Salinity - Tropic Marin Hydrometer (unfortunately)

(Just joking - everybody is testing their water diligently)

Why do you not like the hydrometer? Love that thing. It’s relatively inexpensive and no calibration needed (as long as you test at proper water temp).

Not great if your eyesight is not good. Specifically if I let it float in a large Brute container. Hard to read. But peerless except for expensive conductivity meter. I wish the club would buy one and bring to the swap and let people test their salinity - it would be eye opening for many. And salinity is arguably the most important parameter.

I have one but to dang big lol. I've only used it once, can't fit in my tank and so far I haven't done a huge water change beyond using a few 5 gallon buckets. Not really a complaint, I just find the Hanna checker more convenient.

Not arguing the other is likely more accurate here, however the Hanna keeps things from fluctuating when calibrated so I mostly stick to it. If I ever have doubts the TM one would give me a way to verify things.

Now if they would only make a mini version that's not over a ft long lol.

Buy a 14” hydrometer jar from morebeer for $7. That’s what I’m doing.
