So with your kH at 4.2, then your Alkalinity is at 1.49 meq/L. If it were me, I would add a buffer to raise the level. ;)

So I have a silly question. Why can't one just use distilled water to make sure it is at zero? The instructions that came with my Refractometer state to use distilled water to calibrate. Why do I have to do it with the 35 ppt salinity standard? :~

I really don't know what to suggest, but I would like to clarify your kH. You state it is 4.2. Do you mean mean your Alkalinity? If your kH is 4.2 then it is too low and I see that as being a problem. :)
